Hello everyone,

First of all; it's great to be part is this forum, in the past years that I have been seriously interested in firearms this forum has helped me A LOT in getting me started in firearms and purchasing, shooting and maintaining my first rifle.

I bought my first rifle a few months ago when i got my licence (here in Holland it takes at least 1,5 years from joining a range and club before you can buy a firearm). the rifle shoots great, the rifling is very strong, and the rifle is very forgiving.
The corrosive ammo (Chech 67 silvertip steelcore, berdan primed) can be a pain in the butt to clean, but I've gotten pretty handy with copper brush and Ballistol :p

Its a 1943 Izhevsk PU sniper. nothing special really, but the first time I went to the range with my new rifle (after getting the scope zeroed and the barrel warmed up), even though it was winter and raining wet snow , I shot a 2 MOA group with the Chech surplus, it made my day.
(my feet were soaking wet and I had no feeling in my fingers left )
I suspect it was first an ordinary infantry rifle that was build up with a mount and scope, and it has been re-crowned, but it shoots well.

Right now I have more of a chin weld than a cheek weld, but I plan on putting something on it, any tips?, I heard an Eagle Cheek pad works well.

I also plan on bedding it when I have shot the rifle a bit more and I know what its capable of. does anyone know what glass bedding would be best? (maybe something like Devcon, JB Weld or Brownell's Steel Bed?)

Enjoy the pics and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!, Louis

beautiful rifle. i love it. 2moa is great too! just me and my advice/opinion, but i probably wouldnt invest much as far as bedding and other stuff goes. with a mosin, you'll be in an area of diminishing returns, so it may be prudent to stop here. for target shooting type accuracy, consider a remmy 700.

however i also understand wanting to get the most out of your rifle, and its yours, so do what you need to.

once again, beautiful rifle. if you decide you hate it and just want to get rid of it, PM me ;)

*edit to add* one thing i might do, since it's reversible and pretty easy to do and cheap, is shim the trigger for a lighter pull, thatll help accuracy for sure. for cheek weld on my rifles i use a beartooth combraiser. cabelas has them for under $20

Sweet rifle! I have a PU sniper that I made out of a standard rifle that shot great. I added a nice reproduction scope I got from the Ukrain, she will do 1.5-2 MOA.

Congrats on the nice rifle.

Dr. Mall Ninja: Don't worry, unless I'm at the range, rifle and ammunition are allways separated, I greet people at my door with 200cc of hot coffee, not 147gr of lead :D

Kis2: Thanks, good advice, Ive read sites like 7,62x54r and mosin-nagant.net about simple modifications like shims, I wil certainly try that. I wasn't going to bed it right away, but yes, i wouldn't be able to get much more accuracy out of it.
I was planning on keeping it original, but since it has allready been fitted with a mount and scope I was just thinking of things I could do to make it more accurate. you read my mind by the way, my next gun will probably a S&W m66 or m19, but a remmy is my nr 3 :)

30 cal - congratulations on getting a rifle in the Netherlands. You did well lad. I hope you have a full llifetime of enjoying the shooting sports. Welcome to our community.

Sooooooooooo, that shot wasn't taken on a tripod, by remote, or timer???????

I googled the beartooth combraiser, looks nice, I might try it.

TIMC: 1.5-2 MOA is great! what kind of scope is it? where did you get it from? is it from Kalinka, or any of the other modern repro's? First I wanted to buy a 91/30 and fit a base, mount and scope myself, before I found this one. so Im interested to see in what you used. how is the glass, is the image bright? is it a three-post reticule?

Here are some more Pics btw...

Big Bill:
Thanks! I love shooting, It relaxes me, and gives you the oppertunity to own a fine piece of workmanship. My next gun will definately be a revolver, either a Smith & Wesson or a Ruger, the Smith has a trigger like butter, and the Ruger is tough as a rock. (although comparing a Mosin to a S&W is like comparing a rusty Beetle to a Ferrari :p)
It's was a lot of paperwork, waiting and going from choosing gun - police - gunshop - police checking gunsafe - TownHall - police and on before you can go to the range, but the moment you pull the trigger of your own rifle for the first time, its all worth it :)
The mosin is a great starting gun, but also one I will keep. I try to learn as much as I can everywhere.

sometimes I envy how easy you can get a gun in other countries, but it does make things a lot safer over here. If someone is shooting in an irrisponsible way, he/she is kicked out. there are hardly any accidents here, so I'll take the waiting time for granted.
a few weeks ago I was shooting and got a ricochet against my head (someone had shot with the wrong ammo on a .22lr indoor range), it was nothing serious, but it was the first accident in 40 years at my gunclub. Still have a little round scar on my forehead to remind me why Im allways wearing safety glasses :p

The best to you all! Louis

Wow, beautiful rifle brother! And most of us cannot boast having to show so much persistence and dilligence to become the legal shooter of just one rifle. That said, some of us might envy some of the freedoms you good Dutch folk are able to enjoy free of governmental interference... Good for you on both counts!

Tell us more about the provenance of your Mosin sniper!

Not to take sides either, but I've not taken a ricochet to the head in all my plinkeriffic mayhem (though I know it's just a matter of chance, and I sure am glad you're OK 30cal).

Bottom line for me is that I feel better knowing that the solid, law-abiding dudes I've met at the rifle club that 'pack heat' are out there to potentially foil the bandits (which we all know are not in the least affected by gun laws that only good men would obey anyway).

That said, have you looked into a Dragunov or a PSL (same cartridge)?

[QUOTEuhh pic number 3 doesn't look safe
][/QUOTE]

Depends on which end you're at. :)

Louis, I have a MG with the folding bayonet. Paid $99 for it. Just curious, how much did you pay for yours?
Today I was shooting my .22 Marlin rifle at the 100 yard section when the guy next to me shot a rifle with a report that sounded like a canon. I looked over and noticed it was a MN. I haven't shot mine yet but now that I know it sounds like a howitzer I'll use two ear protectors, lol

Veel plezier ermee, maar stop uw wapen te richten naar de camera man.
Het is altijd geladen, ook als het niet geladen is!

Hoeveel heb je ervoor betaald?

(everyone else, sorry for the Dutch ;))

Accepting the premise that your regulations make it a lot safer is wrong. Why does it have to be that long a waiting period? Why does limiting the number of firearms to five on a "verlof" make it safer? You should be active in trying to improve your regulations

That rifle is in great shape. Excellent finish from what I could tell. I wouldn't go deep into accurizing it. Like mentioned before it could do more harm than good.

Col. Plink: thanks, the good thing is, I've had a lot of time to practice.
You're right about gun control, I have a hard time making up my mind on gun control and what would be the best. On one hand, its pretty safe here but if you outlaw guns, only outlaws wil have guns. you're not even allowed to carry mace or anything, so especialy woman can be an easy target. thats the downside to it.

Five-O: I paid 450 euro's for it, that's about 650 dollars, may seem much, but most sell them for 750.
for comparison: a Remington 700 Police costs at least 1050 euro here (that's 1520 dollars)

you're right about that too Boris, whether you have 5, 6, or even ten weapons doesn't realy matter, either someone handles rifearms in a safe responsible way or not. and 1,5 years is excessive, after about 6 months you already know what kind of person you are shooting with.

I've looked at Dragunov and PSL, but they are not comon here, and I'm not a semi-auto man, I like my rifles bolt action and my handguns six-shot :)
I find that you dont have that same "connection" with your rifle if you have a semi-auto, you don't have that silent moment when all you hear is you extracting the empty brass and feeding a new one by hand. It gives me a moment to concentrate and steady my breath before the shot. and you cant experiment with reloading, headspacing etc.
May sound a little filosofical, but shooting isn't just banging lead downrange for me :)

I searched for the markings a little bit more and this is what I found out:
The two "flaming bombs" (one on the barrel, one on the reciever) are without a doubt the arsenal stamp of Liege (Belgium), so at one moment in this rifles life it past trough Belgium. Vic at Gunboards told me it probably cam from Trans Arms.
The most probable answer is that Trans Arms found a crate of Mosins in Bugaria (there's a Bulgarian property stamp on the barrel) and shipped these to a Belgian wholesale store where my local gunshop owner bought it. At some point these ordinary infantry rifles were fitted with a base, mount and scope.
Really interesting to see how a rifle can come such a long way from production before falling into my hands :D
Here are some more pictures of the barrel, receiver, muzzle, and the shim I found under the front screw. they are vage, but its night here so I will try to take some better ones in broad day light.

Anyway, it's nice to see some young shooters from europe, I'm 21 myself :)
In number of guns, I'm already way over what's "acceptable" in the Netherlands tho :p

And I know who Drummen is, friends of mine go there for reloading equipment sometimes, but I've never been there :)
You're more from the South of the Netherlands then?

Nice to get to know you Boris, if you're young, than you still have a lot of time to learn:)
So, what is your definition of "acceptable"? :p What guns do you have? I like to know what kind of guns you regularly shoot with.
I think they changed the law in Belgium some time ago, did it affect you?

I am from Arnhem, but since I have a student card for public transport (ov-studentenkaart), traveling is not realy a problem for me :) Maurice is a great guy, really friendly and allways ready to answer any questions.

Yeah, the law changed completely, just as I was getting started shooting. It did get tougher to buy certain kinds of firearms, as you now mostly need prior authorization from the province. If you're a sport shooter with a license, some procedures go smoother, but in general, it now takes quite a while to get guns. It took out the variance out of the procedure for the most part tho, and people get treated more equal now. (It used to depend heavily on which police department you lived in, as the PD used to write the authorizations. In some it took 3 days, in other 6 months. Now it's about the same for everyone in the same province, although there are still differences between provinces)

I'm at 11 now I think, so I think I've done well the last 3 years :)

What I shoot most is my HK USP expert and Dan Wesson 1911, but I've just gotten an AR-15, so that is getting some trigger time now :) If you'd like a list with the rest, PM me :) How old are you? I see you're still a student too.

Nice pictures by the way, the setting of a Mosin in the snow works really well :)

PM send Boris, love to know what you are shooting with :)
I've had a lot of time behind an AR15 too, its a nice, well designed rifle, and arguably one of the most accurate semi-auto you can have. you can hardly go wrong with it, but its to much plastic for me, good ol' reliable iron & wood are more my style.

Im 20 years old btw. Im studying Fysiotherapie now, but any by the mosin dislocated shoulders will pop right back in with the next shot :p
11 already?!?, it got you good than :)
