I have just aquired a Ruger kmk512 (aka mkI stainless bull barrel 5.5inch target sights).

I would like to know your opinions on most accurate ammo and where to find a good nylon holster suitable for filed use. Any other nuggets of wisdom are welcome as well.

Thanks - Bevr

First of all, welcome to the forum BevrFevr :)

I've had good experience with CCI Blazer & PMC Zapper .22 ammo which are the typical high velocity cartridges. There are more expensive "match" ammo out there, but Ruger MkIIs will shooting anything pretty accurate

Thanks

I've been lurking here and was a previous member at TFL under a few different usernames.

The reason I ask is i have a bull barrel revolver that really does not like some of the HiVel fare.

I was looking at some of the Eley Match Pistol when I made the purchase but I was wondering if it was worth it.

Thanks -bevr

Mine seems to love CCI Minimags. If you want to go nuts though....That Eley Match ammo is good stuff. Also Try out the Wolf match ammo they sell. It's nothing like Wolf's other ammo. Just the same name on the box.

I haven't tried any match ammo through my Ruger, but it really seems to like the Federal Classic stuff in the blue & gray box of 500.

Ruger .22 ammo

My 10" MKII Target feeds anything, so I go with Wal*Mart Federal: 550 rnds. for about $8.00. Never a problem. I shot about 400 rnds. yesterday...did a minimal cleaning. Took it out today and finished off the brick. Fun!

I just picked up a 5.5" SS Bull barreled 22/45 today; and man, can that thing shoot. Hands down the most accurate handgun I own, and a delight to shoot. What a bargain.

Thanks!

I appreciate the info.

No one has mentioned holsters yet. I'm worried about protecting the front sight from wear when I take the pistol into the field.

I searched on cheaperthandirt but they only had shoulder holsters. Not that I am opposed to this but I would prefer a belt holster. Any suggestions as to where to look or name brands.
I would be partial to nylon but leather is an option.

Also I must correct my mistake it is a MKII not a MkI.

I found that Volquartzen has some neat goodies for these pistols. 2.5 lb trigger may be in order. They make some real laser zapper space pistols.

Thanks again -Bevr

My Ruger 22/45 seems to shoot Wolf ammo very well. Accurate, clean-burning. It's about $20 a brick.

The stuff is made in Germany. Nothing like the Wolf ammo that's made in Russia.

Regards.

Welcome and congratulations on the purchase of a Ruger MkII. My 4" blued model will shoot anything and rides in either an Uncle Mikes nylon holster or a nylon shoulder rig. My KMK678gc (slabsides) is a bit more persnickety about ammo but prefers high velocity. I've had good results with Federal and Remington Golden Bullet bulk packs. Everything else jams repeatedly.

The partridge front sight on the slabsides (and I think your KMK512) would continually snag while drawing from a nylon holster. I considered grinding off the angle on it but decided to mount an Ultradot scope instead. Now I'm looking for a bandolier holster to tote it with.

Let us know what you end up getting. One can never have too many holsters.

Great pistol, I love mine. It feeds most anything reliably but .22 semi-automatics are going to have occasional failures to feed/ eject (IMHO). The Mark II is mucho fun anyway. Mine rides in a nylon Uncle Mikes and I have not experienced snagging on the front sight. My good buddy carries his ancient Mark I in an old GI leather Government Model holster (for about 20 yrs). If money is no object, the Bianchi UM84 (current GI issue) would probably work well. The quality is excellent (my 1911 rides in one in the field) and the flap provides protection. Cost is about $60.

Keep it clean and tell it you love it, it'll last forever.
:D

PS: Buy extra magazines. Lots of magazines.

If you're going to order some Volquarzen goodies anyway, add an extractor to the list. My MkII and 22/45 never had too many stovepipe jams, but they went to absolute zero after putting the Exact Edge extractors in them.
