So I am considering getting a VEPR in 7.62X54r but I have come to a tough descion between two models. The gun would be for target shooting but I would also like to be able to carry it easily/handle it well so I would prefer the 20" barrel. So here is the first gun http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct1002.aspx. It is a VEPR "Dragunov" that is typically $1169 but it is marked down to $899. The second gun is http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct1129.aspx, the VEPR with a 20 inch barrel. So since the guns have been marked down to the same price I am considering the Dragunov model because it retailed for almost $300 dollars more and seems to have have more features, but I am also considering that the gun is heavier/longer with the 23" barrel. What would you do? The other thing is I can't find out anything on the Dragunov model. Does anyone have one? Thanks in advance!

The only difference I see between the rifles is the barrel length. Neither model is close to a real Dragunov, as Vepr's are based off of the RPK light machine gun. So I say if you want a 20" barrel, get one.

I don't understand how that the 3" difference in the barrel length would account for (initially) a $300 difference in price...

The shorter-barreled AK's actually are a bit more accurate due to reduced barrel whip. They're a lot more handy, too. I'd get the 20" one. That's probably going to be your best bet. At that length, they handle great. Good weight and balance to them.

I emailed Atlantic and they said the only difference is the barrel length.

In that case I'd say get the 20 inch model. AK pattern guns tend to be front heavy and the longer barrel isn't going to help any with that. The shorter barrel will be easier to handle and you shouldn't lose any accuracy with it.
