I currently have a very old commercial money type safe that I hauled off for free 30 years ago. It truly is a bank vault on wheels. It is solid freaking, can't broken into it steel. Multi step door interlocks,,, yada yada yada.... It's a BEAST! But to put a long gun it, it has to be put in a sock and canted. Yeah know the type. Heck it's so fire proof it's not funny with 8" thick solid steel box and matching door. As a respected hobbyist lock smith myself. I have allowed a few trusted lock smiths over the years to bring apprentice smiths into my home and use the safe as a study project if you will.

Anyway somebody has offered me more money for the safe than I think it's worth at 10 fold. And many times more than I've ever seen a safe of the type and brand sell for. The seller has paid me 1/2 down and has no real time limit on the final sale and pick up date. A day to one year,,,, no problem.

So this leaves me needing to buy a modern safe. No rush but,,, it has to be done. I have been looking, researching, pricing, comparing. And honestly I'm just about lost.

What I need in a safe is pretty simple. I do also have a gang type box that is fire lined and sealed that I keep a lot of C&R in that I've bought over the last two years.

The new safe needs to hold my pride weapon's, important papers, wife's jewels, a laptop that has our life on it. Money and or gold and silver. With a good steel shell of 10g min. I want 1 hour min fire stop by current marking hype. Combo lock. I can increase door gasket/fire stop very easy with boiler sealing methods. ( It's part of my trade/craft ) I don't mine purchasing a slightly under fire rated safe and turning it into a fire defeating beast. I know how to do that at penny's on the dollar over retail junk claims..... Simple and cheap. :) But it needs to be a good theft proof safe.

Also I don't care about life time fire and BG warranty. I'm not into paying for others insurance!

I need the safe to hold a .50 BMG bolt action cannon and four more scoped long guns. A combat and uplands 10ga shot gun. One AR and one AK and 2 06's. A gagal of pistols. And at leat 2k rounds of my very best ammo.

I do not care about paint, finish, pin stripes, a freaking Elk or Pointers or GO USA Themes, nor back lighting or mirrors. I can strip and refinish a safe better than any lot that claims auto finish. Or CUSTOM BS. I have high end spray guns, booth and advance ceramic, epoxy, and even rust bluing ability's at my deployment. Which adds a question to be asked. Does anybody know of a company that build a solid safe in primer and just a open box I can finish out myself.

I have looked into vaulting out the closet in my office. But darn, do folks want big money for what they claim to be a vault door. In my opinion I do not see the 4 to $20k they want for them.

I honestly do not want to pay more than $1700 for a stand alone safe that I can mod to my standards and no more than $2k for a so called vault door. I can insulate and build the closet out for under $1k with .50" boiler plate steel and extreme insulation.

What do you say. I need some help here. Talk it down up, sideways, or your freaking crazy.

Post Up!

Thanks

I think you just talked yourself into and out of about five different ways to approach the project. If you're looking for a modern safe, as an option, it's more a matter of fire rating versus literally the interior room to hold your stuff. And it's going to cost $2K at least based on the listed volume of stuff you've got. After that, it's just all about the color ... or the elk sticker. Sure sounds to me (what do I know, I just own a safe) that you're qualified to rig a closet up into a fantastic and functional safe that will satisfy most of your needs other than the fireproofing aspects and probably would enjoy the project. Is it too late to keep the old warhorse safe? If not, that's an unlisted choice.

Around here, 1/2" plate sells for about $25 a square foot. A 7' x 3' x 2' closet, plating all sides except the door side would cost $1,375 in steel alone.

I would keep your eye open for a used commercial safe large enough for your needs. Having worked with the locksmiths you know, surely one of them could point you towards something that's available.
