i just bought an sks the other day for $299, its a Russian model with 1950r stamped on the reciever cover along with the star symbol that designates its a tula model. the description on the tag said "new in box" and it appears to be because its in great shape and it doesnt look like its ever been fired. it came with the original sling and the little white plastic oil bottle with the communist star on the side, and it came with the instruction manual. i was wondering if that was a good deal or if anyone might have any information about it? because i really dont know that much about it.

I bought a similar one in around 1992 for $212, IIRC, which was probably an exorbitant price at the time.

I've seen them for $450 a year or two ago, so I guess it wasn't a bad investment.

I from what remember, $450 was the price for a Russian SKS with the red star stamped on the side, meaning it came from a certain armory (probably Tula as the OP states). This is when the normal price for a standard SKS was $200, which is what I got mine for a few months ago. Can't go wrong with a Russian, as Almond27 says, and the price is good (especially for the current market) if the rifle is what I'm thinking it is.

after looking at the gun a little more and finding more info about them i found out the gun was probably refinished, the bolt carrier is finished black instead of silver, and the rest of the gun has a parkerized or some other matte finish on it. i dont know if some were made that way or if it was just refinished at some point. there is a box with a diagonal line through it under the tula symbol on the reciever cover ubove the date, i guess that means it was rebuilt, maybe they just did that when it was rebuilt. its still a 1950 Russian tula though and its in like new condition, it looks nice, and its shoots pretty well too.

Ya, it was rebuilt, but thats still a good price. If anything the rifle is now more functional!
