I keep seeing threads about what parts people have swapped out of their factory guns and I wonder if changing a stock slide stop (I have a Springfield loaded - about three years and 5k rounds old) to one of the "big name" stops like Brown Hardcore, Wilson Bulletproof, ect. acutally does anything for me other than lighten my wallet? Mine works just fine at locking the slide, but it is fairly loose at the pin. Would the tighter tolerances in the link area from one of these fancy parts make any difference? Or is is the old 'don't fix what isn't broken'?

As long as the stop doesn't swing up and lock the slide at inopportune moments, you're in good shape. I ordered a new slide stop for my Springer GI because I didn't care for the cast original, but that was a personal taste issue. If you're looking at the Wilson part, don't buy the extended lever. One of the Wilson folks told me that people tend to hit it inadvertently while shooting and lock the slide at the aforementioned inopportune moment.

not worth it?

Are you saying the bigger pin size really doesn't do anything other than make it harder to insert and take out?

Pretty much. If you've got a really bad rattle from it, you might have a wonky plunger and/or plunger spring. Just how loose are we talking? Falling out loose, little bit of rattle loose... And are you talking loose fitting to the frame, or loose fitting at the bbl. link?

If you happen to like the shape or feel of the finger pad area then change it out. I find that the Brown feels better than the usual shape. Other than that I've seen no FUNCTIONAL change, but I do like the shape of the Brown under my finger so I have them in my 1911's. It seems to have deeper and sharper checkering and my thumb doesn't slip when I reach over to tap it.

I put a "cool" extended slide stop on my Gov't (WWII RR 1911) a long time ago and thought I liked it (small hands-you know what that means).
I thought I had weak mag springs the last time I shot it, from never locking open.

I experienced just the opposite of what Azrael256 warns against. I shoot with my thumb on top of the safety and I believe I was holding the slide stop down.

Even if the through pin of the slide stop is undersized to the frame hole, the detent should keep the stop from "flopping" up.
