After months of reading THR and lots of other research, I finally bought my first revolver, a 686 SSR. It fit the requirements of what I was looking for, and felt great in-hand. It's going to the range this week for a box of .38s and a few .357s.

But I'm wondering...what is the hand-done numbering inside the crane?

Here's the gun...

That is a sweeeeeeeeeet looking gun! I have been after one of those since last year but can't free up the cash to do so yet.

Can't really help you with the numbers you're asking about, except tell you that an J-frame I had a couple years ago had similar numbering in the same location.

Those numbers are used internally for Smith and Wesson during the production process. They mean nothing to customers or authorities. The numbers are used to identify matched groups of components to be assembled together.

Thanks, Steve_NEPhila, for the info. I figured it was something like that.

As for price: The best price I found anywhere was Budsgunshop.com, for $774 including shipping. The list price is over $1,000 but I saw local prices from $850 to $930 or so.

I bought one about a year ago for $799 in MN. Great gun. I load medium loads in .357 cases to make cleaning easy.
