I recently won this M96 at an on-line auction. It looks to be in extremely good shape and these are becoming a little pricey here in California. Thought I better get it while the getting it is still good. I got it for $200 plus shipping.

It is not "all matching", but isn't a total mix-master, either. The receiver, bolt, all bolt parts, buttplate and stock are all matching. The floor plate, bolt release, barrel bands are not. Stock disc is marked "1" in the barrel condition segment.

Did Swedish armories play "mix and match" with these rifles when they were in for service, or was this likely put together with non-matching parts after it was imported?

I'll try to get a bore picture posted.

I collect Swedes and you stole that rifle....

It was probably fitted with a few mixed parts over here... The Swede Armory guys would have never done that.

It will probably out-shoot most scoped rifles.

yes the swedes did do that, i have had several that came out of the cases at the importer with mismatched parts. look in back of the trigger guard for crowns(denoting arsenal work.) eastbank.

You did good, those are great rifles, if it has the right disc it has a very good bore, looking forward to the range report..............

I found this on the stock, behind the trigger guard. Is this the arsenal crown you are referring to?

The bore looks incredible.

It is very hard to show how shiny and sharp the bore is with my cheap camera...but it is.

The Crown over the Ö means the rifle was worked on / upgraded or repaired at the Tygstation (Army Armory workshop) in Östersund.
Östersund is about mid-way up in the middle of Sweden and it is called the Winter City.

Unless I am seeing that wrong and it is really a big C under the crown... In that case it would be the Carl Gustaf State Rifle Factory at Eskiltuna.

While it was sent to an Armory, like almost all Swede Mausers at one time or another, my experience has been that the Army Armorers would match the parts or even force match the parts. In the end they even used electro-pencils.

I have a #`s matching Husqvarna M96 & will have to say, that one looks every bit as good.............

yes, they are arsenal rework stamps,i would not let a few mismatched parts keep me from buying a good rifle,as long as the bolt and reciever matched(should check for headspace any way). eastbank.

thats a very fine rifle you got there !
i got the reworked version ... a cg 63 match rifle , and with a good shooter behind it , it will outshoot many , many new factory rifles !

I've looked at it through a lupe and it appears to be a "O"

Thanks, edwin.

I love Swedish (and Swiss, Finn, etc...).

I've got a CG63, a CG 80 and several of the FSR M96 diopter sighted rifles. Amazing rifles.

Thanks, eb

I happened to be at the lgs yesterday and noticed an older gentleman picking up two rifles, including a nice looking 1903 M96. Stock was walnut and in good condition. I was not able to look at it closely enough to determine if the parts all matched, but I did see the price tag-$600

The Swede Mausers are great rifles. In many ways they are the exact opposite of the Mosin Nagants. Where the Mosin is a bit crude, the Swede Mausers are elegant. Where the Mosin have mediocre accuracy, the Swede Mausers are usually lasers, and where the Mosins are beat up, the Swede Mausers are typically in fantastic shape.

The quality of worksmanship on these, as well as they way they were cared for, is incredible.

Great deal. I bought one of the Interarms M94 imports on a booze-fueled GB whim that had been reasonably well sporterized at some point with a fairlly plain Bishop stock, a nicely lightened trigger, and well-mounted old school Lyman scope bases for $100 more than that. All numbers matching but the mag floor plate. You have a really nice rifle there that numbers matching or not, looks to be in excellent shape.

Thanks, guys.

I took the Swede to the range today for a few quick rounds down range. I'm thinking of using it at the vintage military silhouette this weekend and wanted to see where the rounds were hitting. I shot 2 rounds of Hornady 140 grain match, 2 rounds of Fiocci 142 grain match and 2 rounds of Prvi 120 grain match.

Considering the different ammos, the group wasn't awful. I'll look through what I have left after the match on Saturday and try some real group testing.

+1 you stole that gun BIG TIME.

BTW-Most swedes I have seen lately do not have matching floor plates. Who cares. Its important for the bolt and receiver to match right?

I had to double check the post date, you know...making sure this wasn't a necro thread from 2002 or something. I paid $175 for my Swedish M96 in '99 and sold it for a little over $400 in '08, so I'd say you did well. I miss mine and still look for a decent M94 every now and then on the auction sites. I have nothing but love for the uber-efficient 6.5x55 cartridge.

Thanks GN and Sd

I know this doesn't prove much, but here is the target I shot with the M96 yesterday. Two rounds each of Fiocci, Hornady and Prvi match ammo @ 100 yards. Main thing for me was to find out if the windage was on and to fire the thing and make sure it hit paper.

Considering that it was three different brands and bullet weights, I was surprised that the group was as good as it was.

I'll see what I have left over after the match tomorrow and try for a real group.
