My dad made these.

30-06 with factory Winchester 150gr put a hole in left target at 100 yards, but at 200 it was just a divet. My 7mm Mag with 120gr Nosler Ballistic tips, AK-47 with FMJ, and my .223 with 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips just made divets in the steel at 100 and 200 yards.

Yep that's what happens when you shoot MILD steels with high vel rifle rounds

FYI a cratered up target is EXTREMELY dangerous and should not be shot at inside 100 preferably not at all!

What surprises me is that the fmj throught he 7.62x39 didn't penetrate. I figured the fmj would go on through. The other two don't surprise me. Dont care if it is a 7 mag, a ballistic tip is going to come apart very quickly.

It doesn't surprise me at all. In shooting various a572 or a588 plates it quickly became obvious that the impact velocity is the prime factor in how much penetration you see. Construction is irrelevant because the bullet gets transformed to KE and heat apoun impact anyhow. You'll see a varmint bullet penetrate just as much steel as a lead cored FMJBT if they're both the same mass and are striking at the same speed

we had a hypothesis that if the impact is close to center, it may go through, if the shot is off center, it won't. This is due to the target's ability to deflect. The steel is of unknown quality. But they work pretty well. AR 500 is supposed to be the steel to use for targets.
