Hi folks. Just got a WASR 2 from a member here. Just want to share some of my impressions from this thing. This is my first AK platform btw.

** the built is rather nice. It's basic but not bad at all.
** the finish is rough but do not seem to affect function.
** I got 2 brand new bakelite mags (brown with fake wood grain) and they fit TIGHT. I mean, it doesn't have a mag well like AR does and has slight magazine wobble but doesn't seem to affect function when cycled by hand.
** Chrome barrel and gas piston are nice.
**** Stock is rather small. You have to hunch up a lot to line up the sights.
** RIfle is fairly light even with fully loaded mag.
** barrel has a small feed ramp but not double ramp like the AR design.
** Tapco G2 trigger is actually pleasant.
** i was scared the barrel would be a US made like a Tantal with wrong bore size but that's not the case with the WASR2.
** came with side scope mount.
** I like the gas piston design vs the AR's DI. I think it's easier to clean the system and i just noticed that the AK has the gas vent holes as well.

Overall impression is that the AK is a truly utilitarian rifle. It's basically a bullet launcher and everything else is designed around that. Just look at the receiver. There's a lot of room in the FCG. It doesn't seem to rattle though, i don't know if this is true with smaller 5.45 built.
When i handled my friend's AR, everything seems to fit tight and high quality. The AK seems like a bunch of parts thrown together. I mean, the firing pin doesn't even have a spring and body is stamped with rivets. What I do LOVE is the ease of breaking it down to pieces for cleaning. I am surprised that all the features i listed came from 1940's technology. I think it's way ahead of its time.

I am not bashing AK's and i know the design goes along well with the Russian war doctrine. In fact i was looking to get either an SKS or an AK and I am glad to get the 5.45 version. I have not taken it to the range but i heard the 5.45 is an accurate round.

Overall i am very satisfied. I spent 500 cash on it plus some 9mm ammo to get it. I got the mags for 15 each from the seller as well. Oh, PICS will come.

QUICK QUESTION:
what's with this compliant part (922r) thing?
Do i need to do anything else to make it legal? AFAIK it has the Tapco G2, orange pistol grip.
Thanks

1st of all, congrats on your new rifle! I'm going to bash the AK in a bit here, but I still love 'em and I'm glad I bought mine.

I just had my AK at the range today. I have a SAR1 (very similar to the WASR) and shot it alongside an AR15 carbine, and an M1 Carbine. It was iron sight day at the range today (range report here). Next to these rifles, I found the AK to be lacking. It's clumsy to handle, the sights are difficult to acquire quickly and the safety, mag release and mag changes are awkward. The more I shoot it with my AR15s, the more I favor the ARs.

It is easy to clean and it's crudeness has a certain charm though. It's a great range toy. Sometimes I just like taking it to the range and ripping through a few mags at 25 yards. It's a great stress relief.

Here's a pic of mine...

yeah, i have been looking at AIM and J&G and have no problems cleaning corrosive stuff. I Have been shooting my Mosin if that matters :).
but yeah, magazine change is weird, also like i mentioned, due to the angle of the butt stock, i have to hunch up a lot to get to the sights.

I'm having a blast with my WASR. I've owned a Norinco and an SKS previously, and Uncle Sam let me shoot all sorts of cool stuff for a few years. But it's been a while since I was able to shoot much or even own my own weapons (wife no likee guns). I'm having too much fun with mine and am burning thru ammo so fast I'm afraid the barrel will be shot out by next Summer. So I'm getting another one to help spread the lead.

The fun factor is seriously off the scale.

And yes ... it ain't no AR. But the way I see it, I spent about half what a good AR would cost me and I spend about 50% less for ammo, so I'm trading the cost savings for 2" larger groups. I'll take it. I have a Winchester M70 Black Shadow in 7mm mag with a Pentax Gameseeker 3-9x40 for precision stuff. After I have a second WASR 10/63 to take some of the pressure off the barrel of the first one, I'll start looking for my next purchase ... an M4. Likely a Stag 2T or DPMS Panther.

Till then ... I'm having an absolute BLAST with Mr. K's finest. :)

Welcome to the AK club. Find you some metal surplus mags before they get put on some ban list by law makers if ya can. Yes some of the cheap ammo can be corrosive, so clean it well after you shoot it.

I mean, the firing pin doesn't even have a spring

Seems like a weird complaint. Your AR, M1, M14 etc etc etc don't have a spring loaded firing pin either. The AK is an assault rifle designed by a russian in the 1950's the fact that it is still a relevant weapon today speaks volumes about the design. I will tell you this they feel light and flimsy but you will be hard pressed to break one.

Congratulations on your new toy.

If you take a carbine class you will learn to appreciate the strengths of the design, as well as overcome some of the shortcomings.

These are truly great rifles out to 400 yards or so.

The Hotshot ammo shot very well over my CED chronograph, and is capable of 2 MOA to 480 yards, at least out of one rifle. ;)
