Hi folks. Just got a WASR 2 from a member here. Just want to share some of my impressions from this thing. This is my first AK platform btw.
** the built is rather nice. It's basic but not bad at all.
** the finish is rough but do not seem to affect function.
** I got 2 brand new bakelite mags (brown with fake wood grain) and they fit TIGHT. I mean, it doesn't have a mag well like AR does and has slight magazine wobble but doesn't seem to affect function when cycled by hand.
** Chrome barrel and gas piston are nice.
**** Stock is rather small. You have to hunch up a lot to line up the sights.
** RIfle is fairly light even with fully loaded mag.
** barrel has a small feed ramp but not double ramp like the AR design.
** Tapco G2 trigger is actually pleasant.
** i was scared the barrel would be a US made like a Tantal with wrong bore size but that's not the case with the WASR2.
** came with side scope mount.
** I like the gas piston design vs the AR's DI. I think it's easier to clean the system and i just noticed that the AK has the gas vent holes as well.
Overall impression is that the AK is a truly utilitarian rifle. It's basically a bullet launcher and everything else is designed around that. Just look at the receiver. There's a lot of room in the FCG. It doesn't seem to rattle though, i don't know if this is true with smaller 5.45 built.
When i handled my friend's AR, everything seems to fit tight and high quality. The AK seems like a bunch of parts thrown together. I mean, the firing pin doesn't even have a spring and body is stamped with rivets. What I do LOVE is the ease of breaking it down to pieces for cleaning. I am surprised that all the features i listed came from 1940's technology. I think it's way ahead of its time.
I am not bashing AK's and i know the design goes along well with the Russian war doctrine. In fact i was looking to get either an SKS or an AK and I am glad to get the 5.45 version. I have not taken it to the range but i heard the 5.45 is an accurate round.
Overall i am very satisfied. I spent 500 cash on it plus some 9mm ammo to get it. I got the mags for 15 each from the seller as well. Oh, PICS will come.
QUICK QUESTION:
what's with this compliant part (922r) thing?
Do i need to do anything else to make it legal? AFAIK it has the Tapco G2, orange pistol grip.
Thanks
