New To Me 270win. Any Thoughts?

As per above, the 270 dream load seems to be 130 grs over 58.5 - 60 grs 4831.

Just to note: I'm sure RPRNY meant H4831 not IMR4831. Both are great powders for .270 Win, but that would exceed max for IMR4831.

On another note, if you REALLY hate that rabbit in your garden, take a look at Varget and a 90 Gr .277 Sierra HP...it will pretty much vaporize them under 75 yards. (They're moving near 3600 fps).

270 is a superb cartridge. Its right at that level of having some serious snoot but not being abusive to shoot like the magnums. I like 150's in them myself with 4831sc or Reloader 19.

This food for thought is really handy, I just got into hand loading, I so greatly appreciate the load recommendations. I have some H4350 but no bullets in 270 just yet, or brass. But I did pick up some 130gr federal ammo http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/fed...ypical-rifle-ammunition#repChildCatid=4600098 just to make sure the rifle runs good before I buy a bunch of brass, bullets, and primers. I did notice the 270win ammo can be had for much cheaper than the 7mag, I'm liking the 270 already and I haven't even shot it yet. :)

I would concur with the recommendations on the 130 grain bullets on the .270 win. If you are going for Elk I would recommend the heavier 150 grain bullets. I would have to say that there is a noticeable difference in recoil between the 130 and the 150. I bought a used Remington Model 700 ADL about 8 years ago for my son to use for deer hunting. I picked it up with a scope for $300 at a local sporting goods store that sold used guns. It served my son very well; he took his first deer at 220 yards with a single shot. A couple years later he took a really nice 10 point Whitetail at about 150 yards again with a single shot through the heart. It's been a very good gun for him and the performance of the caliber outstanding. His first year he used reduced recoil rounds from Remington and it really made it more comfortable for him to shoot at 12 years old. He now uses full power cartridges, but opts for the 130 grain rounds because he's more comfortable with the lighter recoil. I have to say that the options for the .270 win are ideal for a beginning shooter and still have the capabilities desired by experienced shooters.

Just to note: I'm sure RPRNY meant H4831 not IMR4831. Both are great powders for .270 Win, but that would exceed max for IMR4831.

If you dig out some of the old pro books like Bob Hagel's, Game Loads and Practical Ballistics for the American Hunter, or some of Uncle Jack's receipes you will find that most are over the Max in most manuals. O'Connor had one load with IMR-4831 that you would have trouble seating a bullet. You would have to use a drop tube and a vibrator to keep it out of the leades.

If a person needs to push a bullet over the max in a 270 they need to buy a mag. Not that it would help much though.

Kame B, several responders have mentioned Jack O'Conner. Jack was a prolific writer of all types of hunting and rifle related articles back in the '50's, 60's and '70's. Not sure beyond these years? His favorite cartridge was the .270 and he hunted all over the world with it, even taking Alaskan Brown Bear. He's written many books on these subjects that I've mentioned and I believe he was a college professor before he became an outdoor writer. Do yourself a favor and try to find some of his books on the internet as he was widely respected!

The 270 has a large section of bullets.s that you can pick from that is what is very nice about it!

Midway had a big sale on Hornady 130 SP bullets some years ago and I bought 500. I use those for deer and shooting at the range. I have a couple of boxes of 130 grain Nosler Partition bullets that I might use if I ever get an Elk tag. The first hunting rifle I bought was a 270, and after all these years I have never found fault with the cartridge. A 130 grain bullet at 3000 fps is nothing to sneeze at.

My long time choice for the .270 goes back to 1975. My best friend in high school bought a Ruger M77 in .270. He'd already loaded some range pickups with 54.0gr IMR4350 under some 130gr Hornady Spts (predates Interloks). Bullets seated to 3.320" in Winchester cases, CCI primers.
With iron sights, we each shot a 3-shot group at 100yds under 1" . (Sand bags, benched. we WERE 20yrs old... good eyes). He soon scoped it.

I prefer Sierra ProHunters as Hornady has discontinued the flat-base 130gr Interloks. My two .270's also like the 140gr Hornady BtSpt Interloks over 58.0gr RL22.

Edit: looks like Hornady didn't discontinue the 130's FB. MidwayUSA has blems on sale fo $16.09/100. Get em while they last.

.270? That is my sisters favorite for deer. She has taken 114(I think) so she likes it. My grandson got his first last year with his. Old time gun/hunting writer Jack O'Connor said it was "THE" cartridge. So, who am I to argue?

If you like it, its a good round and adequate for what you are doing. I prefer 243 or 308 for the application you described, as I feel they are milder rounds that will do the job just as well, but to each his own.

I bought this .270 NIB in 1987-89 time frame. Cracked the original stock and replaced it with the one pictured years ago. 130 Remington Core-Lokt is accurate shooting factory ammo. I also load 130 grain Hornady Interlock bullets and they shoot accurately and do the smack down on deer and pigs.

I gave this rifle to my grandson a couple of years ago.

I have a Remington BDL Custom Deluxe in 270 that I purchased brand new in 1974, bought a box of Remington 130grn. Core Lokt bullets, placed a Weaver 3X9 scope on it and proceeded to the local range, and sighted it in. Shortly there after I went to Arizona and shot the nicest 5 Point buck with one round right thru the vitals. A few years later I used a hand loaded 150grn Silver Tip and took a nice elk at 150 yards off hand, also a one shot kill. It went on quite a few other successful hunts with me, and my sons and friends, and has yet to let me down. Still own it and will give it to one of my sons when I pass from this earth.
