Last Thursday I picked up the BHP Practical I'd had on layaway.
It's the one with a silver/gray frame and black slide. It has the ring hammer, fixed sights and black Pachmayr grips. I looked at some other BHPs but didn't like the adjustable sights and the spur hammer.

In the deal I got a Browning holster and three 13 round BHP mags. They are stamped "Italy" so I presume they're Mec Gars.

I've had a BHP made by FM in Argentina for almost 10 years, but wanted a fancier gun. I got one. The Practical is a much more polished pistol than the FM. At the moment the FM has a better trigger, but that will change pretty soon.

I haven't had a chance to shoot the new BHP yet, due to days of rain, cold temps, and occasional snow flurries. (Spring in Michigan's U.P. isn't for wimps). I may be able to shoot it Tuesday. If so, I'll post a range report.

ACP as a fellow owner/enthusiast - I think you are gonna like it - a lot. I honestly cannot fault mine and whilst admitting the disconnect is out - it has a very acceptable trigger for me. Did fine in late season IDPA last year.

Stuff a 30 round mag in and it's even more fun! :D

Since Steve Camp chimed in I should say the promised range report on the BHP Practical would contain more and better information if I could subcontract it out to him.

It would also have photographs, which I can't post at present.

I'll just have to muddle through, I guess.

BHP practical with fixed sights in 9mm is my current dream gun. I may have to start looking on the auction sites because I can't find one local

I shot the BHP Practical this morning, but not as much as I would have liked. (I had to shoot photographs for a couple of articles today too.)

I brought Santa Barbara surplus 9mm, commercial Olympic 115 grain FMJs, and a box of Denel/PMP FMJ 115 grain South African commercial ammo. Plus some 115 grain Cor-Bon JHPs. The Practical worked fine with all the ball ammo. I didn't check groups but noticed I was shooting low and left at 50 feet. (My son was shooting a .22 benchrest match and I didn't want to interrupt him to walk downrange. Should have used the spotting scope, but just forgot.)

I had a failure to go into battery with the first round of Cor-Bon. I dropped the mag, re-seated it and then shoved the slide home. The next round fed fine and I had no other problems. A bit later four rounds of the Cor-Bon went into two inches with two touching. I let my concentration slip and threw one about five inches high. Not my best day shooting, but the Practical felt good and looked classy.

I had a box of Cor-Bon 147 grain subsonic in the range bag but forgot to shoot it. Next time.

At home it was just a little breezy. At the range, about a mile from Lake Superior, it was windy and cold. I saw my breath on the line a couple of times and had two jackets on.

Shivering and shooting stopped being fun after a while, so my son and I packed up and came home. It's supposed to be warmer later this week. Maybe I'll find the Cor-Bon 124 grain that's around here somewhere and try that next time too.

If you owned a HP clone before then you have a good grasp on the what to do's and what not to do's...if you do not have Steve Camps book, buy it...put together well, and made to last threw oil and gunk... I have had an HP for the past 40 years...threw two wars, and one action .... in three different sections of the world, and today it is in better shape...then day one. Be warned...one is the start, everyone owns more....many more.

Cor-Bon ammo is somewhat controversial, and shouldn't be the only brand that you try.

Shoot some Federal 115 grain JHP (Stock no. 9BP) and let us know how it shoots...some day when you can check the groups. That is widely accepted as a load that gives superb accuracy. It has in my guns.

Lone Star

I expect to shoot a lot of ball ammo through the Practical. It's cheap and works OK for practice, steel plate shooting, and the occasional IDPA match.

I've got more Cor-Bon JHPs here than any other type. I won a bunch of it playing trivia at the old Second Chance Bowling Pin Shoot years ago. There's a few boxes of Federal JHP stuff somewhere. When I find it, I'll try it.

ACP...if you plan to shoot the hotter loads, I would suggest a stronger recoil spring...in the 18# range. Wolff makes a good one, just be careful when installing it, seams like all wolff springs are a bit longer.....and require some cussing, and sweating the first few times.
