ok guys I just bought two Stevens / savage
the I've been able to find is when i open the barrel and the frame ok 16S and then YZ (H) is in a circle, one is made Westfield MASS and a shorter barrel. The other one is about 3" longer 311 are 16 g it was built in the place SA (B) both not use much can any help mean a great deal I bought them so my son and I to learn shoot skeet I do know weapons I,m a Marine but nothing about double barrel shot guns.

I had one 50+ years ago. Solid reliable gun in my opinion. I always loved their elegantly simple solution to holding the fore end on versus all the other Rube Goldberg devices that abound.

Good snag. I like it!

I have the Fox Model B in 20 gauge, 26" barrels. I've had it for 44 years. I love shooting it and shoot it as well or better than any shotgun (of several that are far more expensive) I own or have ever shot. Mine has very faint markings like yours, but with a magnifying glass and light I can see mine is marked 29T, the T indicating 1966.

If I'm seeing the specks of rust correctly, you could take some oil-soaked steel wool (or Frontier Big 45 Metal Cleaner) and knock a lot of that off (without degrading the finish at all) and it'd look even better.

These used to be a basic, classic working shotgun.

The collectors value in recent years has absolutely exploded and they are now too expensive and valuable to shoot considering current market trends.

I don't see that on Gunbroker, the 12ga models seem to be in the $400 range, the .410's about double that.

If you look at post #19 in this thread, it gives the dates corresponding with the letter code.

In your instance, it looks like the H indicates it was built in 1956.

If your shotgun is marked J. Stevens Arms Company or just Stevens, you have a Model 530 (wood stock) or Model 530M ("Tenite" {plastic stock}) made in the period 1940-1948. If marked Springfield, you have a Model 311 (wood stock) (1940-1948), Model 311Ten ("Tenite" stock) (1941-1948) or Model 5151ST (single trigger) (1942-1946).

All of the shotguns were constructed using the No. 5100 frame which is a variation of the Fox Model B frame. "5100" is not a model number, it is the frame identification number used by the factory. Savage/Stevens did not make a Model 5100 double barrel shotgun.

Hope this helps.

The date code will be a small circle on the bottom of the receiver, usually near the hinge. Numbers or letters in a circle inside the receiver are not date codes, but stampings used during production for various reasons. If your gun has a serial number stamped on the lower left side of the receiver, it is 1968 or later. If the manufacturing location stamped on the top of the left barrel says Chicopee Falls, Mass. it was manufactured prior to 1960. After that, production was moved to the main Savage facility in Westfield, Mass.
