I just bought my dad a nice 1911-A1, something he's wanted for a long time. It's a Springfield US GI Parkerized model with a 5" barrel.

I was going to pick up some ammo at wally world for him as well. What should I be looking for, for SD? Ammo type, brands, grains etc. Thanks in advance.

It had better function with any "generic" but still quality manufacture 230-gr. FMJ, the load it was designed for, or something is wrong with it. Good brands include - but are not limited to - Winchester "white box," Federal American Eagle and CCI Blazer (aluminum or brass) or Lawman. Hollowpoints for defense may - or may not - be more problematic, depending on the individual gun. I suggest selecting a JHP that has a profile as close as possible to that of the FMJ - rounded sides (ogive), narrow cavity.

thanks. so a 230 grain JHP you say?

can anyone recommend a brand/type that would likely be in stock at wally world?

thanks alot!

Walmart doesn't stock too much in the way of JHP, usually just Winchester White Box and Remington UMC Green Box JHP. I'd pick up a few boxes and test the pistol for reliability before carrying with those. Some guns are picky about the JHPs they'll digest.

Never seen SD ammo at Walmart, at least the one here. Remington Golden Sabres function well in most 45s.

I recently tested the Remington 230gr JHP which I bought at Wallyworld to try out in my RIA 1911 - 100 rounds cycled flawlessly ($32 or so for 100).

I've also had good feeding with the Winchester 185-gr. Silvertip and Remington 185-gr. JHPs. As a bonus they (particularly the Silvertip) have a little softer recoil. The Remington's muzzle flash is a bit bright for this caliber.

you are a good son to buy your dad such a nice gift.

i hae seen sd ammo at wal-mart but by no means is it the best but they do work, i have seen umc jhp's, and wwb jhp's.

you should go down to your local firearms dealer shop and sift through ammo there, they usually have darn near every ammo type you want and I use Glazer ammo in my .45 but it's an H&K USP .45 so my ammo might be touchy to your 1911

I found blazer brass the best. Followed by winchester and lastly Remington UMC

As for SD ammo Winchester 230gr hollow points at walmart are plenty good!

In this one instance, I might suggest quantity over quality. The reason for this is, practice, practice, practice. Pick him up as much WWB as you can afford from Sprawlmart, and go shoot, then shoot some more.
