Location
NC SC somewhere between the mtns & ocean
Been readin' lots on here and elsewhere, company sites, dealer sites, went to a couple stores and ranges so far...

* Focusing on 9 MM, w/ right ammo ok for SD/HD, ammo cheaper so can shoot more for practice/fun.

* Main reason buying to protect self and family, but like guns. Main reason for initial gun purchase was for home protection, w/ occasional carry or car for travel.

* Thought possibly may want to carry more once I had gotten used to having a gun around, in which case if I shot a std size gun very well, keep it at home, and later get a compact version of same gun for carry or car, so action / muscle memory would be same under pressure.

* Now wondering if I could get a compact that would shoot well enough to be only handgun, and possibly get a second identical gun later, to have exact same defense gun in more than one location, or possibly have both on me if the SRHTF.

* Regarding those scenarios, on the HD handgun, I would like rails (which the 26 doesn't have, but may be a way around that) to have at minimum a tac light to search/aim/shoot if necessary in dark if power out etc., possibly ad laser for fun or if felt needed later, but may not need rails for that on glock since has handgrip version, but makes the Kahr more of a dedicated carry, less versatile for me personally.

Testing 3 distances on each gun, aimed slow fire to body, then 5 quick rounds to head of target, to compare each gun fairly. So far I shot a:

S&W SVE 9 MM: ok, mixed reviews, price is right heavy trigger, made me shoot lower than intended, could be adjusted (way I shoot it), but my thinking for avg shooter, I should have something w/ no learning curve to be accurate in defense situation out of the gate. (prob ruled this one out, based on below, but just telling you everything I shot so far)

S&W M&P 9 MM: Better than the SVE, felt great in hand, shot well, like the grips, good left or right, mags from M&P also fit the C compact model, if I had both. Couldn't find a place yet here that had a C for me to shoot, but the C feels good for a compact in my hand, esp w/ the pinky extension on the mag

Glock 19: I guess the newer ones have a better grip now (for me), not quite as good for me as S&W, but felt ok, surprisingly shot a little better than the M&P for me, while overall, I only got one or two out of ten rounds outside the glock circle when shooting the M&P, the difference was that w/ the Glock it was much more consistent, on a few occasions I shot bullets through or overlapping other bullet holes I just shot, from 13-25 yards. Overall, I just had tighter groups w/ the Glock, and this was first time I shot the Glock, whereas I shot the M&P at diff range the other day, and shot it for the second time today. This was w/ taking my time to aim each shot from two distances to the body, then rapid fire 5 rounds to the head at short distance, all hit target centerline, whereas a strayed one shot w/ the M&P.

Glock 26: While the grip of any compact feels a little funny compared to either of the above, this gun seemed reasonably stable in my hand for a compact (again, I'm familiar w/ guns and like them, but not a long time shooter). Accuracy was pretty good, probably comparable to the M&P for me.

Things I wish I could have shot:

S&W M&P 9C: Again, held in hand, feels a little better to me than the G26, just like the M&P std feels a little better than the G19, but since I shot the G26 well, wonder how I would shoot this M&P Compact. Things that make you go hmmmm...

Kahr CW 9: dealer said it's just like the P9, but has less finishing details = less cost (quoted $425 or someting), has nice bevel on barrel for easier holstering. I was telling them about my plan w/ the Std & Compact combo of same gun, but wondered if I would be just as happy w/ one Compact and they recommended I look at the Kahr, as they were carrying them in the store, since they have to carry all day, they liked the size. It felt good in my hand, but the rental was checked out, and I had to leave, maybe I could go back and shoot it. The narrow flat size does seem to promote itself as an assett if planning to CCW, but I have done zero research on this gun so far...

- So.... w/out having a war about it, any unique features I should be considering of these, or other similar guns?

- A Glock owner overhead my conv in there, he said get the 19 or the 26, they also can use same mag, and he claimed was only gun of that cal./size that had a 30 rnd mag avialable for it (I guess in case any zombie attacks, but it was interesting to hear that) Confirmation anyone?

- Any ageements, disagreements w/ any of my logic for either scenario above (std + compact or two identical compacts, etc.) Or if not going that route, going w/ a Kahr or other brand.

- Aside from the Kahr ($425), I see many of the above guns see these priced between $480-$680 depending on base pkg, adding night sites or tac light, etc., any idea what I should be paying for the above guns? Should I used Bud's or TheGunSource etc., as a price guide?

- If I pick one, should I buy from a dealer here, or wait and try to catch a deal at one of 2 gun shows coming this month? (next weekend and following weekend)

P.S. I live on border of NC/SC, lic says SC, but most of my dealers are on NC side, more competition there, but have to pay to transfer, so if I save $35 dollars on price buying in NC, prob have to pay $35 in shipping and transfer charges, so have to save prob at least $50+ over the SC dealers in order to justify (for handgun, long guns can buy no prob either state). Based on list prices, the NC dealers are cheaper, sometimes as much as $50+, but don't know if the SC guys will deal at all, haven't asked until I know what I want first.

Thanks for your help...

Me, I really like my G19. Great compromise in size for most applications and a really really good shooter!

Plus, it has the track record of reliability we all look for in our firearms.

choice

I bought an M&P full sized and a compact. Both are good guns. The compact is barely smaller than the Glock 19 but feels good in the hand. I just went back to the 19 and sold the M&P's. They worked fine, I just like the simplicity of the Glock. For me, the 19 is the perfect pistol, small enough to conceal, large enough to shoot well, totally reliable, easy to maintain. Try all you are thinking about and take your time making the decision. There are a lot of good guns out there today, pick the one you will have confidence in and enjoy shooting.

tlish what was your 1st best gun to shoot?

and karz10, how come you aren't trying the XD guns? Alot of people are switching over to that from Glock due to 'better' grip angle...

I have the M&P 40, as well as the Sigma 40VE. I love the M&P. The trigger seemed a bit in need of a buff for the first 250 or so, but after that (without the buff) it was shooting smooth. My groups aren't great, but I'm still somewhat of a new shooter, easily excitable, and keep jerking the trigger unless I take time to slow down. The M&P shoots fine, barely had to clean anything other than the barrel after 250 rounds, and it was still shooting straight. The XD-9 is fine also. I fired 60 rounds or so through my friend's compact and I like it. I feel bad because he's been practicing almost every day for a month and I pulled better groups having not fired anything in two weeks.
I'm not a Glock person. I don't like the way they feel, and that's my personal quirk. I can't say anything against the way they shoot or reliability. Do your research, shoot as many demos as you can, get what you feel comfortable with. When the SHTF, you shouldn't have to worry about whether your slide's going to bite you or if your hands are right. Lead on target is what counts, and brand-name means squat if you can hit what you want every time.

Thanks all for the replies...

Hey Pirhana, well I hadn't looked at them initially because I was starting from square one, not having shot anything in a long time, and not owning my own gun, been too busy starting a business, having kids and buying houses to follow most of the things I'm interested in personally, until now.

In reviewing these boards, I have noticed some people talking about the XD guns, so as a matter of fact I went back to a dealer today and looked at the Kahr again, and the XD, as well as the Glocks and SWs. Not being educated about the company's or gun's history, just learning about it briefly in here and at the dealer, I don't see anything wrong w/ the gun. I handled an XD9, but don't ask me the particulars as to version etc.. I liked it, I liked the grip a little more than the G19, a little less than the M&P. I felt it was a little bigger and heavier than the G19, however. But I didn't have oppty to shoot the XD, whereas I know how the other two shoot for me...for now

I guess I like the idea of being able to see/feel whether something's chambered and ready to fire, but I wonder if I wouldn't already know that in my circumstances w/ other guns under most conditions. I'm not sure how much value the grip safety brings me, but it's not a bad idea either, I suppose. Handling it didn't yet sway me away from either the M&P or the 19 yet, but I haven't ruled it out yet.

Boy, I sure do see *asking* price fluctuations between dealers in the area. I wonder what some of these dealers' floor prices are for some of these guns. Take the 19 for example, I saw a few places asking $540+ for base package Glock 19, whereas resources say the haggle price is aound $450-$480. I saw one place who allegedly had a safe I wanted (which they ended up not having even though I just called there YESTERDAY) so I rolled out there to look at that. This place also advertised a Glock deal on their site for basic package for a 19 of $479 NIB, so I thought maybe these guys have some good asking prices. I get there and see a guy choosing between the XD9 and the Glock 19, store guy says glock has reputation for always firing etc., but he loves the XD, etc., customer says what can you do on the G19, he says he has to check the back, comes back and says it's a $700 gun and it's on sale for $599, and the guy bought it. I later asked about the $479 deal for the exact same gun, he said, well we'll honor that, but you have to ask for it, we have to leave some margin in case someone's trading something in to give them a better price on their gun.

I understand padding your margin, and leavnig wiggle room for negotiaters (I'm in sales), but I can't look someone in the eye knowing I ADVERTISE someting for $480 and lie to them and tell them the SALE price is $599. That's just me, I guess. They also had a Remington 870 tactical that 3 other places offer for $379-$399, and they had it marked at $550+. Wow, it wasn't a marine or anything. C'ya....

Well, thanks again, still interested in feedback, still weighing my options. Oh, and from the first post, I'm interested to know what people are using as a guide for pricing, esp w/ the random pricing around here...

BTW, FWIW, here are the range shots I made out of the gate w/ the M&P, G19, G26...

Aside from a few (5 extra) left over rounds in the box (couldn't leave em there all a lone) that got shot through the 26... I shot 15 rounds through each.

5 from about 25 yards to the body, aiming
5 from about 15 yards to the body, aiming
5 rapid fire to the head

Had to attach thumbnails, so click to enlarge.
1 is SW M&P
2 is G19
3 is G26 w/ pinky extender and 5 extra rounds

G19 was the main one where bullets went through bullet holes for me, so less and larger deformed holes account for less than 15 holes, although I did have a nice x marks the spot w/ the M&P, and in fairness shot it first that day, but also only one of the three I had shot before.

Thoughts...thanks for the posts again.

I was actually in a similar situation a few days ago when purchasing my first pistol. I wanted a good reliable shooter in 9mm and everyone suggested a Glock 17. I went to store and handled the Glock and did not like it. The grip angle was way too aggressive and it felt like a toy in my hands. Handling the XD9 on the other hand was AMAZING. It fight like a glove. As soon as I picked it up I knew it was the weapon for me, the choice was easy. The XD9 was less expensive, with most of the features I wanted from Glock, and everything that I thought a Glock should have.

Sorry to sound like a commercial, but let me just say that I'm VERY happy with my purchase and look forward putting many rounds through this gun. If you can get to a place that rents, I'd definately try both out.

FWIW the information I've found online puts the XD at the same level as the Glock in terms of durability and reliability. Good luck with your choice:D
