Newbie for 458 Lott, 45/70, & 45 acp. w/Lock-N-Load

I haven't unpacked the Hornady Lock-N-Load press yet, and I know I have a Rock Chucker somewhere. I did order the catalogs and books for reloading. All four (add 458 Win Mag) calibers are planned for reloading.

There will be some time in the near future for study of reloading (I did 375 H&H on the Chucker years ago), but I was wondering if someone could suggest any parts I might order ahead of time along with setup suggestions.

I think I need to order a shell plate for the Lott, which I suppose will work for the 45/70, and the 458 Win Mag? The 45 acp shell plate might have been ordered a few years ago? I would not mind a small investment in a case prep machine, or other suggestions.

You will need shell plates for the calibers you reload. The dies you have will work. If you do not have any bushings for the LNL, may be useful. Not required unless you want a quick change. You may want to look at some shims for the dies so you can go between the 2 presses without resetting the dies. You probably already have the calipers. Case lube, like the Imperial Sizing Wax would be my first choice with the calibers you have listed. If you are neck sizing, maybe some neck sizing lube (mica).

As far as case prep, you can go cheap as the Lee's, to the full motorized stations. All depends on how many you need to prep and how often.

Hornady lists:
#14 shell plate for 45-70.
#5 shell plate for .458 Lott and .458 WinMag.
#45 shell plate for .45 ACP.

I load the .458 Win Mag on mine. Works just fine. Like rc posted, shell plate #5.

I'm assuming you have never used the Hornady AP LNL. I would start out and get everything to get one cartridge going then it will be easier to expand and know what you need for the others. I see yo uhave reloaded before but if you haven't used an AP it takes a bit and when you get it dialed in it will take a while to switch over. I have mine set up to load 45 acp and usually don't change it. I have a turret (you can use your rock chucker if you can dig it out) and load my 45/70, and ruger 480 rounds. I find in the time it takes to get the LNL convered from one size to another, i could have just loaded the 20 rounds of 45/70 i needed on my turret. plus a full conversion costs around $110. i mean how many 45/70 rounds can you fire at a time, before your shoulder falls off, probibly not enough to fully use a progressive loader? I have almost 2k 45acp rounds stored, and maybe 100rds of 45/70. i will go through them about the sametime.
