Was there this much of an uproar when Pentax did the same thing?

I imagine that all the camera manufacturers are hurting these days. As good as cell phone cameras are, I haven't used my SLR in a while now.

I wouldn’t call the blip on the radar when Pentax made a mistake. They’re less than 5% of the market, so a big mistake for them doesn’t constitute much of a ripple.

The mirrorless revolution with a shift towards integrated/hybridized cinema-esque video horsepower is how cameramakers are making their money today. Less soccer moms are buying entry level DSLR’s, but all of these wannabe Instagram stars are preferentially buying up mirrorless EVIL’s with video capabilities. I’ve been using and helping others use DSLR’s for social media photo and video content for a long time, and we predominantly shoot sports photography, so this photo/video hybrid performance game has been a natural evolution for us as well - convenient when you’re in a small niche which happens to swim the same direction as a big fad, and you can reap benefits of mutually beneficial gear development.
