I wonder exacly how "background" checks could be "tougher"? I suppose some would like to see "letters of recommendation" or "interviews with neighbors and family members."*

That's what we have here. For shotgun you need to name one referee who can vouch for you and for other types of firearm you need two.

You also need to give details of your doctor so they can contact them to check you're not depressed, insane etc.

The police also get to see every crime you may have comitted including traffic offences. We have a similar thing to you that 'felons'* can't own guns but the police caa technically choose to refuse you a certificate** on the basis of you having comitted non-felonous crimes in the past.

*We don't have 'felonies' and 'misdemeaners' here so no legal concept of a felon. The criteria in this case is being convicted of a criminal offence that is punishable by three years or more in prison and not having had that conviction quashed.

**This doesn't apply to shotguns, they must issue you a shotgun permit if you ask for one and are not a 'felon', insane etc.
