Since we're pretending, the future rifle should fire a round like the 5.7 but due to better powder, the case would be half the length and fire the 5.56 round at 3,000 + fps. That would allow twice the rounds in the same space. The rifle should have a butt stock like the M16 that will also be a magazine. The forearm will also be a magazine that will feed the rear magazine through a tube. Both magazines should hold around 500 rounds. The rear of the butt stock should fit over the shoulder and have a second barrel pointing backwards in case the soldier was surprised from behind.. The rifle would have a sighting device (red dot or reflex) looking forward and one looking rearward to aim at any surprise attack from the rear.
The rear firing barrel would be powered by excess gases captured in a chamber during firing. The forward barrel and stored in a chamber. The rearward firing barrel would be loaded from bullet in the pistole grip and powered by gas captured in the chamber. The idea would not be to constantly fire at someone attacking from behind, but to give you time to fire until you could turn around. The downside to this design would be that it could be quite heavy.
