Next generation of guns for civilians?

With the vast amount of firearms already owned by folks, that use smokeless powders, I doubt that technology is going anywhere for a long time, especially when it comes to sporting arms. Changes in technology for hunting is a slow process and as of now, regular firearms using smokeless powders are very efficient for killing and their parameters are the reason we have such liberal seasons. Look how long it took to get crossbows accepted as a means for the average citizen to use? I still use several guns that are over a century old for hunting and they work as well on game as anything I could buy new and cartridges for them are still readily available(.32 special, 30-06, 12 and 16 ga).
