300 WM has the most qualities I would want for maximum range, bullets, range supersonic, energy, well developed and accurate. That is if you actually want to damage something at maximum range. I like the 7 mm for the same reasons and that is what I use. For hole punching you may want a specialty cartridge. For off the shelf stuff, 1000 yards or maximum range beyond that I would stick with the above. I love the .308 and 30-06 and they are very proven. Depends on what your idea of long range is and what you want the bullet to do when it gets there. Up to 600 yards many choices, beyond that the field narrows. The .243 is a good hole puncher. Look at what they use for long range matches.
