Making progress on my AR setup-

So I've settled on the Leupold AR MOD 3x9 (#115370). The matching Leupold mounting rings are the #911547. However, I would like to add a red dot sight to this setup also, and it doesn't look like this mount has that capability. I also would rather have the red dot mounted on top if possible (rather than the side) because I'm not crazy about the idea of tilting the rifle to use the red dot.

Can anyone recommend a Leupold (or other brand) mount which can accommodate a top-mounted red dot sight?

Thank you all, this forum is a great resource.

I am not familiar with the mount but it you can get the red dot to co witness the regular sights you are on the right track. If that cannot be done, look elsewhere.

Colt, he isn't trying to cowitness. He's trying to mount a red dot above a conventional scope.

Like so:

Yes, this is what I'm trying to do. Thanks!

So, to be clear, if I order the PEPR Mount with the 1" rings, it will work with the 1" 3-9X Leupold scope?

Absolutely. As you can see the top ring halves of the mount are a standard Picatinny rail, so whichever micro / mini red dot you choose that has a Picatinny mount will clamp right on.

On a side note I have that Burris Fast Fire III on a SIG522 and I can vouch for it being a nice precise dot on a low profile frame. In post #4 it is shown with its cover on, it looks much less obtrusive without the cover.

In researching red dot sights I see many references to either 3 MOA or 8 MOA dots.

Does this mean (in the case of the former) that the red dot would appear to cover a 3-inch circle at 100 yards when viewed through the sight, and (in the case of the latter) an 8-inch circle?

If this is correct, why would anyone select an 8 MOA red dot?

That's correct

You'll see 8 MOA dots commonly used on pistols, shotguns, and carbines set up for shorter range use where speed is more important than precision.
