Dad wants to mount a j-point/docters style red dot on his AR. he has a BIG scope, but wants to be able to use it for closer stuff too. I have seen red dots mounted above the scope but that sounds like a lot of difference between the barrel and sight. With a picatinny mount, it would seem that tilting the gun would be a little more practice, but would be much closer to the bore line. Although it wouldn't follow the curve of the bullet, for the closer use, it wouldn't matter. Could even put an anti-cant device on the offset rail to practice and get good with it.

The photo below is what I have on one of my 3-gun ar’s. Once you rock the rifle to view the dot it’s at the 12 o-clock position so trajectory is normal. They are both at the same height so you don't change head position just roll the rifle back and forth.

Do you mean the curve of the trajectory of the bullet? If so, then I believe you are in error. The bullet does not care what sight you use. If you are sighting with a 45 degree offset red dot and rotatating the gun so that the barrel is below the sight when firing, then it is just like having the red dot mounted in the standard position above the barrel.

Ignorance below

I was always under the "ass"umption that the barrel had a slight upward angle to it. I guess i never really thought about it, but that makes sense, as long as the sight is over the barrel. Are you using a sight level with the red dot?

It's a 6-24x50something A-1 POS. It:s big, and on a 20 varmint rifle. Been looking at doing the same thing, so I can't give up the idea. But I am looking at a 2-7 or 3-9 scope on a carbine.

Given that the purpose of a canted red dot sight is for quick acquisition of short range targets, shooters aren't likely to be using a sight level with the red dot which will cost additional time.
