Found a new in box Norinco SKS at a local pawn shop for $230 - I bought it. I've heard they have gone up because in price due to the ban on importing them. It doens't have the spike bayonett for some reason...maybe they aren't leagal to have on the Norinco's? Good buy? No, didn't take any pictures yet haven't told my wife either!

They run 150$ here new, but they are new, and not 10 years old. The older ones usually have a finish that is much better than the current production.

EIther way, I have heard that they are tanks, just with crappy furniture/finish compared to the yugo and russian ones.

I say it was a good buy

The Norinco SKSes (and other products) have been banned for quite some time now here in the US, hence the higher prices as compared to Can where they are still legal to import.

It was during the time the Norinco SKSes were legal to import that the law to eliminate the bayonet was passed. You'll find some Nor SKSes with the bayonet (imported before the law) and some without (imported after the law). (The law was not restricted to just SKSes or Norinco.)

Sorry but you paid a little to much. Looks like it has the non-detachable mag, going price here is $190.

$230 sounds like a good, fair price to me. The Yugo's are starting to hit $170 and they weigh quite a bit more and don't have the chrome-lined bore. You did fine.

All standard SKS' have 'non detachable mags'. If you see one with a detachable mag, it's

a) been bubba'd to accept it or
b) uses non factory, aftermarket duckbill mags (which technically are still "non-detachable") or
c) is a factory SKS-M or SKS-D that is made to take AK mags

I agree, you done good. The Yugo SKS' can still be imported without restrictions under the C&R umbrella (if Yugoslavia hasn't run out of 'em).

The "law" about the ban of bayonets wasn't really a law, it was an interpretation of existing import laws. Just goes to show how easy it is to restrict guns even without getting a real law passed.

That could very well have been as it was very early in my gun collecting career and didn't have a firm grasp on all of the existing and pending laws going around then.

Got mine in '89 with spike bayonet attached and it was not more than a year after that the bayonets on new guns were detached off of the guns (but sold with them).

Prices differ in different places. IMO, it sounds like an OK price to me for my area. Not exceptional, but not a bank buster too.

You can find bayonets at gun shows.I recently bought a couple of them for $10 with the screw to attach them.
Any price in the neighborhood of $200 is good if new in the box like yours. You did well.
