Trench guns hold a fascination with collectors and a “cool factor” all their own. But why? Is it simply because they deviate from the rifles, muskets, and other single projectile arms typically carried during wars in previous centuries? Could reasons exist in other arenas as well? Personally, I feel that they provide a fine metaphor for the men who used them: they were regular, everyday implements placed in extraordinary circumstances.

Short scatterguns are one tool that in any hands... civilian, law enforcement, military, corrections... serve quite well. The pump guns are utterly reliable, and are among the cheapest guns to produce. Unlike most military weapons, the shotgun transitions directly into other aspects of life without alteration. Most people do not carry full sized pistols for defense. Most people have little use for a select fire or fully automatic weapon. Most service rifles are not immediately conducive to sporting purposes. The shotgun comes off of the fighting front and blends in to daily life. Trench guns carry a few extra pieces, but they do not get in the way of other purposes.

There is a unique beauty in the raw usefulness of these guns. Blending function with history turns beauty into awe.

Very interesting subject....At least for me. A buddy of mine was collecting trench guns back in the 1970's-80's and had several very nice examples. That's when I first got interested in them. They are definitely cool. Thanks to you guys who posted the links.
