Going off the serial number it appears to be made in 1960, which makes it by far my oldest newest acquisition. I have never really cared for the way the long barrel N frames look but the 4 and 3-1/2" models are quickly becoming my favorite revolver look.

I wish I'd seen it first.

I have a blued four-inch M28 and really like it.
Two of my .41s are nickeled and a nickel 28 would be nice to have too.

It's my understanding that only a very few M28s were made in nickel. A few sales samples and some police orders (I think the Fla Highway Patrol bought some, maybe others) and I hear these were all brushed nickel rather than polished.

25 S&W model 28's with 5" barrels and nickel finish marked
FHP #32 thru #56 were shipped in 1959; and the S/N range for these
weapons ran from S189071 up to include S192687.

Also a few (unknown quanity) were made with a dull nickel finish for
salesman samples.

You know....

You people really do me no favors by posting pictures of these beautiful weapons. Just when I thought I had my "list" narrowed down to only 5 more purchases and my collection would be sufficient (for the time being) here you go with showing my one more, of what I can only expect to be a series of many, thing I am unable to live without.

thanks for your help... :p

That makes me want to send my 6" 28 back to S&W and have it nickel plated.

Can any one tell me if those grips look original? I know the picture sucks but my photo hosting site lets me send only 640*480 which they further compress.

Yep, they look like Herret's. I have a pair of the same on my 58, though I'm hunting for original magnas. Very nice looking revolver!

Thanks for the answers.

Can you believe I posted this gun on the S&W forum and got 99 views without a single comment? They must not like either nickel, new people, or my crappy photography over there.

I didn't post on the Smith forum because I'd already commented here.
I was one of the views there because I wasn't sure it was the same gun at first.
Merry Christmas and many more happy Smith purchases!

I am starting to think that you are right, and that it isn't interesting enough for them. Oh well.

On an unrelated note, I finally managed to get one of those stupendous deals that I hear are come place in other parts of the country. Yesterday, I went back to the same shop I picked up this 28 at and they had a 4" 66 no dash for $250. It locked up nice and tight and looked really good with what appeared to be minor holster wear. Pics to follow after Monday when I get to pick it up (Peoples Republic of Illinois has 72hr wait).

However, the deal I got was not nearly as good as the one the store was about to get. Some guy was in the process of selling a real HK91 to them for $700:eek:
Maybe he was yanking their chain or just completely clueless. Even if he was desperate for cash he could have still asked for more than that. For his sake I hope that the gun was actually a PTR91.

Just a note ........If it had the brushed nickle finish and the S&W Diamond grips that came with it you would have had 50 guys email you by now and try to buy it! About 75% on the S&W forum like them to be as they come from the factory and the other 25% appreciate them as shooters. I am not saying this in a bad way either. The collectors seem to outnumber the shooters or at least post more actively.
