I was just looking at cabelas and they have the night owl night vision 5x scope, for 149.00 are these any good, does anyone have any experience with them? I've never used any night vision, so I don't really have an expectation of what they should be like.

The low-cost night vision scopes tend to be very grainy and shadowy, good to maybe 30 or 40 yards. I wouldn't waste my money.

My only NVRS is an ATN Mk390 Paladin 4x Gen I+. On a bright night, it's good to ~200 yards. Heavy overcast, the supplied IR illuminator will get you just past 100 yards clearly. It's a bit more expensive at ~$500, but worth every penny. Like any compact NVRS, FOV is limited, so you do have to know where you need to look. The only "downside" is that ATN builds their stuff to withstand a nuclear blast; It weights over 3 pounds, and you definitely feel that.

I bought mine for popping coyotes in my area. I did a lot of research before settling on the ATN, and I'm glad I did. I don't think anything else compares at that price point. The Luna Optics have good reviews, but they're $200 more, and have only two IR settings; The ATN has 10. The Paladin also has 10 reticle brightness settings, a good thing, because a reticle that is too bright will wash out your target.

After the above post and other reviews I picked up a 390. At night it was, well it could be used but pretty grainy with black specs throughout the image. With only starlight I thought the reticle was a bit too bright on the lowest setting.

I took it to the range and elevation and windage adjustments were all over the place, 8 clicks might give you 1/2" @ 25 or it might be 10" and would change every time I attemped an adjustment.

At least opticsplanet is good with returns and already sent me an RMA.
