I just put my 600th round through my Predator II Bobtail. This gun has yet to disappoint. Neat Story: Earlier this year I had a Nighthawk Talon that I really liked. I called to see if they could fit an extra Predator barrel on it. Long story short I talk to the owner of the company and he offers me a substantial discount if I were to buy a new Predator straight from the shop. How could I say no? I place my order and 9 weeks later I get in the nicest 1911 I have ever owned. Nicer than my Talon, my Ed Brown, and my Baer.
This gun was built by one of their top gunsmiths: Travis Gregory. The fit is very tight but very smooth- tighter than Ed Brown, but not quite Les Baer. The finish is immaculate, and the trigger is a crisp 4 lbs.
600 rounds later it is nicely broken in. The trigger has weight is about 3.5 lbs now, and the gun is very smooth. In the first 600 rounds it has not had any ftf, fte, ect. I have fired hollow points from all major manufacturers, several brands of 230gr ball, and my own reloads. The gun is very, very accurate. The blast wafer on the end of the barrel really does help tame the flip compared to a normal commander sized gun.
In a more capable shooters hands Im sure these groups could be better:
My one and only complaint is the PermaCoat. Ive carried this gun almost daily, and practiced my draw a bit. There is only a little wear around the muzzle. Actually not to bad. The thing that bothers me some is that there are a few small dings in the finish near the ejection port Im guessing that is due to the brass. You can see it in the pictures below:
The takedown procedure involves a paper clip to take tension off of the recoil spring assembly. It is a minor inconvenience the first few times but after a bit you get the hang of it and it is not a big deal.
Overall I am very satisfied with this gun. You could do a lot worse in the semi-custom market. After my experience with my two Nighthawks and dealing with the company I would pick a Nightawk over any other semi-custom builder. They could in a fairness be called a full custom shop. They will build your guns exactly the way you want them using any parts you like.
