Three "D" cell Maglite on the floor next to the bed. A PALight on top of the nightstand next to my Glock 27.
Another PALight on the second shelf of the nightstand right next to a .38 Special.
Why the Pals? Well, at the lowest setting, they don't go completely off. They're always "on"! After my eyes get used to the dark, this soft glow is where the pistols are! Plus the soft glow is bright enough to read my watch or light my way to the bathroom. The PALs are powered by a single 9V radio battery and have an LED that's good for 100,000 hours. On the lowest setting, the PALs are supposed to glow for two years. On the "medium" setting they're supposed to glow for 200 hours. On the highest setting (which is REALLY bright), they're supposed to glow for 20 hours. They even have a "strobe" feature! 8 hour life-span on that one. The case is unbreakable rubber. I'm impressed! PALs are great for travel. I believe even Doc Welch would have said, "Wow"!
