Oddly enough, the time I least expect to be caught unprepared is in my sleep.
The bedroom is reinforced, you're not getting into my sleeping quarters in under a minute unless you brought a bobcat, and the dogs are loud. This provides me plenty of time to retrieve my loaded SKS from the bedroom closet.
All the same, the nightstand guns are unholstered and in condition one as a rule. Because we own a variety of handguns, the wife and I both practice "sweeping" a 1911 style safety whether it's there or not.
As mentioned by other posters, children would dictate a revision of our tactics, however we have none at this time (and don't think I don't hear about THAT weekly from the mother in law...)
