Nightstand Gun - Keep in Holster?

A mod 10 S&W 2" and a Mod 10 S&W 4" in each night stand. No holster. No kids now, but when I had kids (5) it was the same. Kids were trained...

Makarov holster velcroed to bedpost. Mak loaded, hammer down on safe- flip safety down and DA if needed.
12 ga coach leaned in near corner - nite lite between shotty and Mak. Maglite 3D on headboard shelf. Marlin Camp .45/w 10 rd. mag hanging on wall hook above. the 'big boys' are there if needed.

I don't have a "nightstand gun". I have my regular carry pistol that I take off my belt and put on the nightstand when I go to bed, so it does stay in it's holster. The only time it ever comes out of the holster is for cleaning, press checks, and shooting.

I keep my pistol in a holster that has it's tension so loose that it will come off if I gently nudge it or even just bring up the pistol quickly. I'm usually at least mildly disoriented for the first few moments after waking up, so if I heard something and grabbed for my pistol, I'd like to think I'd keep my finger off the trigger but I can't make any guarantees. That's where the holster comes in; it gives me just enough extra safety precaution without slowing me down at all.

I've got a 1 year old son, so our night stand gun, an XD 40, is kept with the chamber empty and in it's own Springfield holster. BTW, that Springfield holster sucks! But, it's perfect for this job.

Before we had a kid, I kept a 642 under the bed....sans holster.

Oddly enough, the time I least expect to be caught unprepared is in my sleep.

The bedroom is reinforced, you're not getting into my sleeping quarters in under a minute unless you brought a bobcat, and the dogs are loud. This provides me plenty of time to retrieve my loaded SKS from the bedroom closet.

All the same, the nightstand guns are unholstered and in condition one as a rule. Because we own a variety of handguns, the wife and I both practice "sweeping" a 1911 style safety whether it's there or not.

As mentioned by other posters, children would dictate a revision of our tactics, however we have none at this time (and don't think I don't hear about THAT weekly from the mother in law...)

Good question. My .357 is kept loaded, on the top of my nightstand, in a 'zipper pistol case' throughout each night. Inside the nightstand during the day. The carry case can be fitted with a small padlock for security from kids.

Dogs are always a plus. They will let a heavy sleeper know that there is a threat coming.

No holster, just my 1911 with tac light and two loaded magazines. No kids in the house, once I have some I'll invest in a quick-open gunsafe.

I do not holster mine when it is in the nightstand drawer, or in my case the cupboard on our beds headboard. It sits on a computer mouse pad with a dowel just behind the balance point to elevate the grip for a very quick retrieval in case of emergency. I can get a good grip on it right away.

I would not holster unless somehow the holster was fixed or attached so that the holster would not come w/ the gun. Suddenly it is a two handed operation when you have to remove the holster from the muzzle.

i have more than one child, so i have a finger print activated safe bolted to the top of the night stand... if i cant get to that in time, i can damn sure make it to the closet where i have a 12ga on the top shelf fully loaded and ready to go...

and btw, the 12ga is not only out of reach of the kids, but the oldest (8 years old) already knows gun safety rules and fires it regularly... so hes probably as good at defense with it as i am

I use a nylon holster that i mounted to
the side of my nightstand with a couple
of screws.It's a short reach as i can't
reach the floor from my bed.

Nightstand Ammunition Cache

Posted my gun situation earlier. Here's what else I've got ready...

My top drawer of nightstand contains a half box of each...
.357 hollow-points:evil:
9mm rounds (that pistol & loaded mag is under the bed in a lock box)
and a little more than a dozen 12ga shells ready to feed into my shotgun (also under the bed) given a persistent threat that those pistols can't manage to stop.:what:

A buddy and me once discussed his HD situation half jokingly. His house then was configured in such a way that his bedroom door opened up to a balcony-type "hallway" and he could see the front door from there. I told him he should ditch the gun and just use grenades. Hear a threat? Toss a grenade down there.

The mental imagery had us laughing for an hour. Side of the house gone, threat eliminated. heh heh. :D

To be on topic: Do they make holsters for grenades?

-T.

Yes. They're called grenade pouches :D
