nightstand handgun with one in the chamber?

I'm not a very bright fellow so I'm not smart enough to try to come up with a "better" way. I figure the gun is designed to be operated a certain way. Some guns work one way, others work another. Not a problem. I work them the way they're supposed to be operated.

A related question.

First off, thanks for the responses. Now, a related question.

Some background:
At home, it's me the wife, and some pets. No kids. It's rare that someone else is in our house even when we're home. I can't think of one time in the last several years that anyone else has been in the house without one of us coming in with them.

Ok, with that said, what do people do about storage while away from home? I don't carry, I'm in a anti-gun county in California. I've seen several people mention shotguns. They pose an even bigger storage problem. Does everyone just not worry about break-ins while away from home, leaving loaded weapons in the house? Or, do you all load and unload daily?

Unless you have young kids in the house or something of that nature, it seems to me you would do fine with one in the honey hole.

I've got kids, so consequently I've got an empty chamber. Almost sounds like I've had a vasectomy

IMHO: one should ALWAYS handle and treat a gun as if it was ready to fire.

If you get into the habit of being a bit more relaxed "oh, there is not one in the chamber... I do not have to check the weapon".. THAT is when trajedy will strike. That one day, you leave one in the chamber.. and treat it as if it was condition-3... BOOM

I agree 100%, but I still keep the chamber clear when it's in the bedside table, but always treat it as if there is one in the chamber. ZERO room for error. :)
