Ok, So I just got my Firearms ID card and a store in PA has an SKS paratrooper I want. If I purchase it there, does it have to get sent home to a NJ FFL dealer? Also, I frequent the Valley Forge Gun Show alot, and if I buy something there, does it have to get sent back to NJ? Any help would be appreciated. I checked packing.org, nra-ila.com and all the other sites. I couldnt find anything. Thanks guys.

While I cannot give you a definitive answer to your question (other than "I think you can"), you can't buy the detachable mag SKS and bring it to Jersey. Buy one with a fixed magwell and you'll be fine.

(I think the SKS paratrooper is the standard fixed mag SKS, only shorter. In that case, cool.)

No, you do not have to ship through a FFL. Long guns you can buy and transport yourself, handguns, you can not. You have to make sure the gun you buy is legal in NJ though. For the SKS, you have to make sure there is no detachable magazine, or else its illegal in NJ.

According to 18 USC Sec. 922(b)(3):

It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver any firearm to any person who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the licensee's place of business is located, except that this paragraph (A) shall not apply to the sale or delivery of any rifle or shotgun to a resident of a State other than a State in which the licensee's place of business is located if the transferee meets in person with the transferor to accomplish the transfer, and the sale, delivery, and receipt fully comply with the legal conditions of sale in both such States (and any licensed manufacturer, importer or dealer shall be presumed, for purposes of this subparagraph, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, to have had actual knowledge of the State laws and published ordinances of both States), and (B) shall not apply to the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;

THIS ONLY APPLIES TO FEDERAL LAW. So you have to make sure whatever you buy is ok to bring into NJ, and also NJ may be a state which does not allow its residents to purchase firerarms out of state. Contact the NJ DOJ to find out. But as far as Federal laws are concerned, it seems you should be ok. It's always good to know the law. Unless you read the law directly, I would never trust what somebody says. Here is a link to the Federal Firearm Laws:

thanks guys. i also checked with the gun shop, they said it was A-ok. and yea the sks i want has a standard 10 rd non-detachable mag. So im good to go. thanks.

I'd done it a few times when living on the other side of the river. It's NBD, as long as it's an FFL.

PA FFLs know Jersey law, and will keep you (and themselves) out of trouble.

Incidentally, there's a hidden advantage to buying your long guns "on the other side of the river".

With respect to long guns, NJ law dictates that certain NJ papers must be kept on file @ the FFLs, which the FFLs in fact do keep. There's no requirement to send them to NJ. :)

Thing is, NJ has NO JURISDICTION to inspect papers outside of their borders.

And that makes me smile.

A lot.
