***???
Now New Mexico requires a medical release form for CCW license applicants.
I was at the State Police office today talking with the secretary about license applicant procedures, when she gave me a copy of an email stating that all applicants must have a "Medical Release" form.
I as an instructor don't need one, but *** does a medical release have to do with CCW?
I have not seen the form yet, but I'm guessing it will require a trip to a doctor for approval.
It SUCKS living in a "third world state".
Sheesh.

No, it just waives your right to privacy and doctor/patient privilege. It allows them to request your medical records as they please an use them to deny your CCW, if they please.

Wow, they make one tiny step forward in restoring god-given rights and before the ink is dry they take another ten back to keep the serfs in check. Sad.

First be certain it really is required. I don't know a thing about NM laws, but know darn well that localities or other govt. agencies will have no problem with trying to sneak in more regulations than they are entitled to.

My line in the sand has been crossed so many times I quit drawing it.

I say we have 10 years left before civilian gun ownership in the USA is literally taxed or regulated out of existance.

Wake up people.

This will no doubt be used to deny many applications. I imagine that many mentally healthy and stable people have reported such symptoms as "depression" or “anxiety†to their doctors and it has been recorded in their records. The bureaucrats will use this to deny them their permits. In TX we have to affirm that we haven’t been diagnosed as mentally ill and that we are addicted to drugs, but this NM step (if mandatory) is really scary.

Is NM a particularly leftist state? I know that our state senators hid there all summer under Bill Richardson’s protection, but since NM is nestled between TX and AZ I find it hard to believe that it can too leftist.

Keep your hopes and efforts up though. TX has actually steadily improved our CHL laws over the years since it has been passed.

Kind of like some of the questions on Form 4473, right?

Hmmm . . . now if only candidates for political office had to answer the same questions . . .

Hey, NMGlocker! Welcome to the forum! Been to any of Andy's classes lately?
Hey,
Nope, I've been working my rear end off trying to get a workable CCW law in this state, everytime I think we've made progress......... some buttmunch in Santa Fe knocks us back into the stone-age.
I did manage a Gabe Suarez Close Range Gunfighting class though.
Good course, excellent instructor.

Back on topic, the new requirements are now posted on the DPS web-site.

The "Medical Release" is basically a "blank check" for the DPS to check any and all medical records, and charge you for any expenses incurred in copying them!
Sheeesh.......
:banghead:
The Governor's phone number is (505) 476-2200. I suggest New Mexico residents make their voices heard.

And the only way to verify that is by checking your medical records. Not a big deal, unless it is abused by the powers that be.

When you buy a firearm, you attest to the fact that you are mentally competent and the Feds don't require a medical release to verify that.
I can buy a full-auto firearm via a Class-3 dealer, and attest to my mental competence, submit my info for a BG check and don't have to provide a medical release.
*** does the state of NM need a medical release for?
If your background check turns up a DWI or perhaps a possesion of a controlled substance charge, then the DPS could ask for medical background info related to substance abuse. Or maybe the background check turns up a disturbing the peace charge, where you were caught running around naked screaming about the second coming, then a mental competency check could be asked for.
But requiring a blanket medical release form, with no reprecussions or accountability for misuse of the confidential medical information is completely uncalled for.
If you are familiar with NM politics you would know that this is an attempt by the DPS to make the application process and rules so onerous that no applicants will apply, or that the law will be overturned by the courts.

I just downloaded and printed all that crap out yesterday from DPS. I see a release of Info. form but I didn't get the impression that it was for medical records? Did they just make this change? Are you sure that they will try to deny you a license based on something as common as depression?
