I feel your pain. I shoot weekly matches with my colt in .38 super and I run in limited class. I run up against guys who use up to 24 round capacity mag. Most of the time its not really an issue (I load while moving from box to box) but every now and again it would be nice to have one or two more than my 10 round McCormick magd provide.

I did take two chip mags and with a little cutting, tig welding and an extra power wolf spring made a 14 round capacity magazine that was short enough to be legal in my matches. The magazine actually works perfectly but i would love to buy a couple from a reputable manufacturer. I already pay $50 each for my chip magazines, if they made one for $75 or less id buy 3-4.

I use metalform mags had not had to buy one since 03 or so but they were maybe $14 then perhaps I could look into cutting 2 like you did.

I went over to Brownell's and quickly found several high capacity mags for the Super.

Caspian makes a 21 round mag and a 17 round mag for the Super. They are at Brownell's under high capacity mags for the 1911.

HMMMMM.........all I see are double stack mags, were the ones you saw single stack? if so can you send me a link please

Maybe with a little push, we can get Meg-Gar to make them. They have made 11 round .45 mags as a standard item. Maybe a group buy?

Tipoc, those are double stack mags. I will admit that I drink the colt koolaid so a double stack 1911 won't be in my safe unless it comes from colt.

BTW, I have ran across some 20-24 round extended length magazines for single stack 1911's in .38 super, on-line and at most any gunshow here in the valley. I haven't bothered to pick any up thou. For one they are no-name mfr magazines so I have no idea if the springs are worth a damn or if the feedlips are properly heat treated, if at all. Second, they are too long to be "legal" in my matches so I don't have any use for them anyway.

Ericf, i use the McCormick mags because they are the strongest and heaviest magazines i can find for my super. I've used metalform, Wilson, Colt and McCormick and i found that the Colt and McCormick last longer than the others. The Wilson's are well made but the plastic followers break regularly and ive cracked a body on one. The metalform ones also cracked near the feedlips. The McCormick and Colt mags (with a McCormick conversion follower and spring) last much longer than the others. Though i have had one of the McCormick mags crack at the feed lips.

Im very hard on my magazines, when shooting matches i have developed a little wrist flick to help throw the magazines from the gun and they fall directly onto the gravel, rocks and any steel shooting boxes or stage props, most often with up to 5 rounds still in the magazine. Ive been tempted to try some cheap magazines to cut and weld but im afraid id just be wasting my time with a magazine body that can't handle the abuse i dish out.

I bought the metalform mags for the price at the time, I agree that the McCormick mags might be better but after 5k rounds in 7 mags with no issues I think I will be ok, but after checking prices today perhaps if I ever need replacements McCormick might be the way to go.

Well, you know that your mileage may vary. Im not trying to dump on other magazines, I was just passing on my observations. One thing to remember, not only are the mags I use dropped in harsh conditions, they really get used alot. I shoot weekly matches, 4 stages per match, generally 3-4 reloads per stage and anywhere from 85-120 rounds per match. At the low end it works out to 576-768 magazine drops every year.Add in the amount of times they are reloaded and roughly 5500 rounds put thru them in matches alone. The numbers would double for sure. Im really hard on the mags :)

FWIW, I still use the Wilson mags, they work great. I just use them for carry only use. They don't get nearly as beat up that way.

Anyway, use your Google-fu and im sure you can find some "no name" extended mags, ive seen them. Just keep in mind that they are of unknown quality. They may work great, they may puke out there guts as you load them for the first time. I would suggest that you only pick up one or two, till they prove to be worth it. Good luck, Cliff.
