If I understand correctly, the .243 and 7mm-08 [and probably several others] are based on the .308 cartridge. Is there, or have there been any thoughts about, a .308 necked down to .270? Seems like such a cartdridge would be perfect for deer and antelope. Just curious - thanks,

The .270-08 has been around for a long time.

It just hasn't been offered as a commercial loading, the demand hasn't been strong enough to get the big name manufacturers involved. It exists as a wildcat, with loading dies and chambering reamers readily available. With the .260 Remington (aka 6.5-08) and 7mm-08 already out there, I doubt the .270-08 would ever garner much market share.

Like the .280 Remington is different enough from the .270 Winchester & 30-06 to validate its existence

Objectively regarding bullet performance (exterior and terminal ballistics), no. Subjectively in the minds of enough people to convince the Remington marketing department? YES!!

Comes a point where slicing the pie a bit thinner doesn't sell enough to pay off the new tooling.

I would argue that the .280 is better than the .270, and that the 7mm-08 is better than .270-08, because there is a much better selection of 7mm/.284 bullets out there than there is .270 bullets...
