Here is a very sad example of that old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished."

A Veterans' Security Officer was murdered by a guy who he helped by giving him a ride in his security vehicle.

By the way, I thought all Veterans' security officers were armed with handguns -- is that correct?

Yountville security guard was stabbed
Thursday, August 7, 2003

By MARSHA DORGAN
Register Staff Writer

The Napa County coroner's office revealed Wednesday that murdered Yountville Veterans Home security officer Manuel Reyes died from stab wounds. Sheriff's investigators did not release any more details from the autopsy.

The body of Reyes, 58, of Napa, was found by a passing motorist around 12:30 a.m. Monday on Dry Creek Road. The motorist saw that Reyes' security car had crashed into a tree and called paramedics.

Investigators are looking for a Hispanic male for questioning in connection with Reyes' murder.

The man sought for questioning took a taxi from Napa to Yountville around 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The driver had difficulty understanding where the man wanted to go because the man spoke Spanish and the taxi driver didn't.

The taxi driver took the man to the guard shack at the entrance of Veterans Home, where Reyes was on duty. She asked if someone one could help her with Spanish translation.

Reyes is bilingual and offered to assist, sheriff's Capt. Mike Loughran said. Reyes learned where the man wanted to go and offered to drive him there in his security vehicle.

That was the last time Reyes was seen alive. His body was discovered around an hour later, about 10 miles from the Veterans Home.

Detectives are asking for the public's help in locating the Hispanic man. He is described as about 21, 5-foot-6, with a medium build and wearing a tan baseball cap, a light colored shirt and very baggy blue jeans. Investigators believe he might have suffered a head wound the night of Reyes' death.

Investigators have also received information that a man matching his description was seen around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the South Napa Marketplace parking lot near Raley's supermarket, asking people for a ride, Loughran said.

The sheriff's investigation unit has set up a bilingual toll free phone line and is asking anyone who may have information to call 1-877-426-4847.

Information about Reyes' family provided to the Register by his nephew Ernie Lugo on Tuesday was incorrect.

Reyes is survived by his children, Stacy and his wife Michelle, Rolando and Melissa; grandchildren Mariah and Kalon; his mother, Angelina, and his sisters and brothers.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., tonight at Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel. A rosary will be celebrated at 6 p.m., Friday, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 981 Napa St., Napa.

most CA security companies

are dead set against armed guards.
Not sure about this place, but most likely
subcontracted pinkerton/brinks
which is all unarmed in CA

TheeBadOne, are you there?

If/when "we" catch this critter, do you hold him and I kick him, or do I hold him and you kick him? AARRRGH! Hey, the victim was "Hispanic" too!

I must have had a sheltered upbringing, or something, because I absolutely cannot conceive of talking rudely to, let alone murdering, someone who has gone out of his way to help me.

David:

Is "Veterans Security" a private firm?

If you are refering to the "VA Police" inplace at the Veterans Affairs Dept. Hospitals, Clinics, etc. a majority of them are NOT armed. (Personal observation).

And Orthonym, borrowing a couple of lines from Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry'

"...Kick 'em when they're up......Kick 'em when they're down.......Kick 'em when they shift....Kick 'em all around..."

Somehow I got the impression from reading the article that the victim was a security officer for the Veteran's Administration -- perhaps I am wrong.

Armed or not, if someone sitting next to you, like say, in a car, has a knife, you are not going to have any time or space to pull out your gun.

I heard about them and if I'm not mistaken, they're sworn, but unarmed. A lot of our jr. college cops here are the same way. Some administrators shouldn't administrate.

The Veteran's Home in Yountville is a California State facility, not a Federal one.

No good deed goes unpunished? There is a fine line between good deeds and very bad decisions. Especially as a security person, the guard should have been well aware of the shortsightedness of picking up a rider. On top of that, I would bet that he violated company policy by picking up a rider as well in the company security vehicle.

Do not invite strangers into your car or a company car.
Do not invite strangers into your home.

Nice guy, but a horrible decision by a person who should have known better.

A truly bad situation and I hate to say this, but what's with security abandoning his post to be a good sumaritan?

If someone is going to hold him, let me know, I want to kick him too!! Maybe an eye gauge..

This is just bs. While bad decision on the part of the guard, he doesn't deserve to die..

Repaying kindness with MURDER makes me :cuss: :fire: :barf: :fire:

Security personell in hospital settings are often called upon to provide transportation for patients, visitors and staff. It is not at all outside the normal state of affairs. And yeah its dangerous and stupid. But, hospital administrators are about as far as you can get from security minded people. Its all about "customer service" to them. And to a security department in a health care facility EVERYONE is customer
