They come from a culture that knows nothing of freedom... so how can they be expected to know how to maintain it?

I guess they are just betting on having the support of a lot of the military again the next time they want to fight tyranny... instead of ending up like Yemen or Syria.

It's from 1941, when he was hanging out with Tom Wintringham and was agitating for the home guard to become a sort of Peoples Militia. A durn good idea.



Orwell was a diehard international socialist till the day he died and was having articles published in Partisan Review as long as he was able to send them in.

Hmmmmm....I must be "remembering" some other author....
Anyway Wiki said he was a "democratic socialist." He apparantly believed socialism was anti-tyrannical in nature. That doesn't exactly jive with my ideas.....but I also don't roll my own tobacco....either ;-)

Sure there's a gun ban in Libya. The same guns that were used to liberate the people from the old boss can just as easily be used to liberate them from the new boss.

The new boss simply can't have that.

The revolution wasn't about liberty. It was about the transition of power. There won't be any liberty.

IIRC by the time Orwell said that, he'd eschewed socialism.

He was a Socialist to the end. He was horrified by what the USSR did in the name of Socialism. He wanted a Democratic Socialism. When he wrote 1984, he really was not making any of that stuff up.

Did anyone read the article at all? Neither the written article nor the video commentary make any mention of banning all firearms. The only thing that even mentions weapons is that independent militias still control territory in Tripoli and are not a part of the state government. People are tired of random DOODZ swinging their AK's around and harshing everyone's mellow. It seems like a reasonable public safety and stability concern to me.
