So I recently built my AR-15 and have put a few rounds through it. I have never fired one before this. The long spring that is held inside the stock makes an awful SPROING noise on every shot. Is there any way to quiet that down? It is very distracting and a bit unnerving while shooting. There has to be a way to make that quiet. Any ideas? Anyone had a similar experience? I have a 6 pos. collapsible stock on it right now but I really don't care for it, so I am in the market for an A2. I am not sure if that will make a difference or not. Thanks guys!

I notice the spring a lot more in the A2 stock, personally. Every time I re-qualify on the M-16 I notice that spring noise way more than my M&P15.

I'm thinking that, you being new to the AR platform, you notice it much more than those who've grown accustomed to the SPROING!

I listened to it for 22 years and miss it. Building my own now.

One advantage to the sound is that when you don't hear it, immediately check to see if the bolt is back. Time to reload!

Some grease the spring, others don't hear it anyway, most get used to it. I can tell you if you're paying attention to what you're shooting at, and what might be shooting at you, it becomes very unimportant.

the same for my Saiga 308 too..

i hated the friction like sound that the spring makes, so i lubed it with some mobil 1 sync and it sort of got a bit more quiet..

A thicker oil or a little grease in the buffer tube, judiciously applied, can quiet the squeak, from what I've read. I think I've read threads on the topic here, but it's been a while. Some springs also seem to do it more than others.

not to mention on a2 stocks, there is a hole that passes through the top buttplate screw, just big enough to leave a giant clp stain on your brand new desert cammies. Get used to it and know when it doesnt make the noise, you know something is wrong.

yeah a2 stocks are quite bad about that...with ear plugs it almost sounds like you are shooting a toy spring gun! i've come to like the magpul ctr alot..it fits me well plus i hardly notice the spring noise.

I have a CTR stock and the spring noise is noticeable. Like the gritty (over exaggeration) feeling of the piston in my AK moving back and forth, it's just something that goes with the genre. (I will say that my SKS is a smoother shooter than the AK)

I don't think I've ever noticed that sound... Now I gotta go shoot and see if I can hear anything going on in there!

I had the same question the first time I fired my Bushmaster. I was used to my Sig 556 and wasn't expecting the spring noise. I bought an AR mostly to round out my collection, but after finally using one I much prefer the ergonomics and other aspects of the Sig 556 platform. Not to mention that with the handle on the side, there's no charging handle to cover up when you mount a scope nice and low on the flat top.

The sproing noise is normal. If it really bothers you, remove the spring and coat it with grease and reinsert. That will cut down on a lot of the noise.

Just shoot a mag or two without plugs and all you should hear after that is a high frequency ringing in your ears. Shooting from the hip will also do the trick.
Seriously though about the only way to rid yourself from the spring noise completely is to get rid of it http://www.zmweapons.com/lr_kits.htm makes an upper that does this (you also get a folding stock in the deal). I think Para is also making a copy of this design.

IMO, the buffer assembly makes the gun sound louder on a full cycle than the last round firing and locking the bolt back. The last shot is the only one I can actually hear the crack and carry of the round; all the others are just a brief bang overshadowed by the sproing sound and the whoosh of reciprocating steel.

I'm still fairly new to the platform, so when I hear that last, quieter, *bang*, my brain immediately goes to "misfire mode". Learning to correct that with an immediate tilt to check the ejection port with preparation for corrective action.
