What do you guys think about using something that is not name brand for carry/SD purposes?

I usually carry a wheelgun, so I didn't have to do any extensive reliability testing with my carry ammo. With the auto I carry, I ran about 100 rounds through it to test it. All went well, but I'm sure there are guns out there that will only eat one brand of HPs (1911's, I'm looking at you), and what if that one brand is the last one tested? That would not be cheap.

So, there's plenty of small businesses out there who offer their own loads topped with premium HPs like Gold Dots, XTPs and Golden Sabers. Does anybody have any experience with anything like this? It seems to me that if it's the same bullet rolled in a comparable package, one could really benefit from being able to extensively, and inexpensively, test and practice with these rounds.

Due to some legal and practical concerns, I'd never carry anything I personally loaded. However, I do carry Double Tap in my woods gun and I know of a ton of people carry Double Tap and Buffalo Bore in their carry guns. So what about other companies like Reeds Ammo?

They have some great prices for sure. I'm thinking about ordering some and giving it a go. I shoot a box or two of my carry ammo every once in a while, but I would really like to practice more with what I carry. I could see some serious advantages to being able to shoot 50-100 rounds of what I carry every week.

If all initial testing went well, could you guys think of any reason not to carry something like this? Would you trust it any less even if it had proven itself at the range?

I've used Georgia-Arms ammo for years. They use Gold Dots in most of their ammo. Never had a problem and carry it for SD.
