I have to agree with the cane. I always where and when proper carry a firearm concealed but my cane goes everywhere with me.

If you're interested in mag lights there's always this.

The Surefire E2D Light.
surefire_e2d.jpg

It fits in your pocket and it's just a regular flashlight and then if you get into a violent encounter that warrants it then you use it as a fist pack and you bang the scallops at the end of the light into their head and then run as fast as you can. I'm sure that I don't have to say that whoever you're hitting with this should pose a definate threat to your safety, but I'll say it anyway.

You shouldn't use it in a run of the mill fist fight in a bar/pub over nothing if you don't have to.

IMHO the Defender models and Strike Bezels speak to intent and take a great tool that can be carried anywhere and turn it into a weapon in the eyes of the hand wringers.

A few times a year I go to DropKick Murphy concerts in different states. The only thing you can take in is a flashlight. The last one I went to the security guard looked at my light and said he was just making sure it had no "teeth"

Big Block took the long way around on that post of his stating he is "automatically" justified. He's not, not even in Oregon. No one may "automatically kill". They CAN use Deadly Force, to stop the other person, which MAY result in death. But if the other person has stopped his agressive action and BB gives him the "one more" and it kills the T*rd, BB is a murderer. He's justified in defending himself and may only use deadly force if his life or the life of another is in issue. Yes the ORS says he may use if threatened with the use of physical force, however, case law has made clear the restrictions on that. As for "Making a weapon" out of his flashlight, under Oregon law, anything used as a weapon, IS a weapon, so no foul there for him, it's just a flashlight, however modified. but if he lives in Metro Portland, he can expect to be raked over the coals for making the flashlight, "more deadly." Portland is like that. They're trying as hard as they can to out San Francisco the city of San Francisco.

I'm definately with HSO on this one (plus the guy who made reference to the rolled up magazine - most shops give them away free, then there's the big issue or local gig guides).

But for pure SD you can't beat Geoff Thompsons advice - "Learn to hit F***ING HARD!"

Stay safe...

You might also want to consider that a better method of SD would not to be in the places where trouble starts in the first place!

Get into 35mm black & white photography; buy a 1960s Yashica or Voigtländer with leather case. "Repair" that old leather carry case with a new nylon strap and beef up the strap to case attachments.

What kind of work/school do you do, I have a friend in NYC who carries a spray can of adhesive with him, he used it once, and the guy hit the ground screaming and holding his eyes instantly. Another guy is a commercial artist and keeps a brass tube with screw on ends with him with just some odd papers in it for show, but that 1.25 inch brass tube with threaded end caps would hurt if he started smacking you with it.

Are you near Water, as in it might be an acceptable decoy to use a small snap shackle or a bronze block (pulley) as Key chain fob. Or find out how to do traditional maritime ropework and make a monkey's fist or turks knot around something heavy.

You are a student, how about bringing some food stuff in a bag with a big fork?> or a pocket knife with some cheese and bread in a bag? Keep the pocket knife in your front pocket, if you see the authorities checking, drop it into your backpack with the food.

think about your everyday life, all sorts of things become tools, you are the weapon. Find what tools make your job easier.

I knew a girl who kept getting bullied around at school. She got tired of it. She bought herself a baseball cap and a pack of double edged razor blades. She removed the razor blades from the container and sewed them around here and there in the lining on the cap. It worked to..On the first or second swing the razor blades cut through the lining. On the next swing they cut through whoever it was she happened to be swinging it at..Of course she went to jail and of course we got her ass right back out. I was setting in the courtroom in my undress blues with the enlistment contract in my hand grinning while the judge explained to her that she had a chance to get her life back together and all, and how he felt that 4 years in the Marine Corps would be much better for her than 13 years in the Alabama State Pentitentary!.The District Attorney in that little town didn't like it too much (guess he saw her as another stepping stone on his way to becoming a judge or something) but he went along with it. Gathered up his papers, stuck them in a case and left the room without a word and without looking at anybody...Okay...

So I ask of you, what SD weapons can you think of that simply cant be identified as a weapon if I get stopped and searched on the street?

Good question. It applies to anyone going to a foreign country where weapons aren't allowed or where foreigners can't have them.

I'd say first and foremost a hardwood cane or walking stick. It looks old worldy and nice, but packs a really serious smack and can certainly be deadly. It also allows you to push a foe away and down, thus giving you time to exit which must be your goal in such situations.

I would advise against using adhesives or chemicals. Their effects are hard to predict, and can be a lot more or a lot less than you need. They may blind people for life or they may do nothing.

Tjena Ninja,
Do you live in Malmo? My wife is from Goteborg. I lived in Goteborg for two years and worked as a bartender. For a small, mostly peaceful country I saw some crazy stuff there. Yugoslav mob car bombings (right down the block from my bar), feminists bombing the porn shops, huge brawls between the Turks mostly, crazy soccer hooliganism, among other assorted violence. I feel for you as I was also searched by the police multiple times.

Funny you should mention the screwdriver, because my fellow barman and customer chased down a pickpocket and the customer was stabbed in the lung with small screwdriver! I would reccomend wearing some really solid steel toe boots, but they might be a hindrance if you had to escape quickly. Also, wear a belt with a LARGE belt buckle that you could whip off quickly and swing. Other than that, I would say just use your best situational awareness skills. I wouldn't risk carrying any sort of blade, spike, club or other shafted weapons of any kind there. Too risky. Take care man,

I study biochemitry at the university, and though I have acces to plenty of chemicals that can blind, deter, maim or disentegrate I am not willing to use any of them for defence. While the chemical itself is useful as a weapon, it is useless without a ecure vessel to carry it in, and a safe way of deploying it in a hurry should I need to defend myself.

I live near water, but carrying such items anywhere than near or on a boat would get me into trouble.

Again, I wouldnt be aboe to deploy a knife from my backback fast enough in case of an emergency, and I wouldnt be able to slip the knife into my lunckbox unseen when I am suddenly tapped on the shoulder and searched for weapons.

Yeah, but as I am a poor student, I have to live in an area where the housing is cheap, and cheap housing equals more bums and immigrants, which again means more trouble. Once I finish my education and start making money, I will move to somewhere else. Until then, I have to live where trouble often start.

Close call! I live in Copenhagen, but I have actually attended to lectures on Malmö University. The threats you faced in Malmö is pretty much the same threats I face here in Copenhagen, exept that I have never seen or heard of feministic terrorism. Yet. I do see a lot of gang related crime though, and racist hatecrime commited by disaffected immigrants against danes are unfortunately also common, though no one speaks of it out of fear of being labelled a racist.

Yeah, that's kind of the way that it is here too.

Is pepper spray legal there?

Pepperspray is a weapon, so no. It is banned 'for our own good'. A few years back, a company tried to sell a spray that would cover an attackers face in sticky but completely pain- and harmless blue foam, giving the defender a few seconds to run away as well as making it easier for the police to find the guy later, but even that was too much weapon for our anti-weapon government. There will be a cold day in hell before any object designed to defend one self will be legal to carry here :(

The mental training to recognize and escape a dangerous situation is your best bet. But sometimes that just isn't possible.

I would have to agree with the old school style can opener idea. As a slash, stab, tear, weapon it would do a number on the flesh.

And a roll of quarters as well....kinda like the old school leaded gloves, a punch becomes almost like hitting someone with a hammer. Might break a couple of your own fingers in the process, but I would consider that a small price to get away with your life.

I have never come out of a hand to hand situation without something bleeding or broken on myself, even as the "winner" of the encounter. That is just something you have to accept.
