Noob Q. What is 1911?

I was thinking the same thing, AtomSphere wants a Hi-Power.

Another great John M. Browning design (his last), and probably the most asthetically pleasing pistol on the planet. (Of course, I am biased, since any pistol that saved my life, twice, is going to be beautiful.)

The P35 Hi-Power design can be had either new or used, including some military surplus. It has a double stack magazine holding 13 or more 9mm rounds. It can be customized to your desires. Take a look.

(Disclaimer, I don't currently own a Hi-Power, but do own three 1911s, all in .45.)

possible sticky

I'd like the moderators to maybe consider a "what is a 1911" sticky in this forum. It is a popular enough question that I believe that it might warrant a sticky.~Nathan

which brand of 1911 is cheap and good?

I have a Norinco 1911 that I picked up for about $350. The Norinco is an excellent quality 1911 made in China. It's frame is solid forged steel and its barrel is as accurate as many $2000+ guns. Also, the Norinco can make a great donor gun to customize with after market upgrades. If you happen to come across one don't pass it up.

He's asking for something inexpensive. The Hi-power is not inexpensive for a 9mm, or I'd have one.

You can find FM Hi-Powers for around $300, and FN Hi-Powers with the SFS system for around $400.

Sarco has the FM's for $299 right now. So does The Dealer Warehouse.

CDNN has the FNs, but I've seen a couple of other people post here that they've got them as well.

Either option is as cheap or cheaper than a low-end 1911.

Also, don't discount what can be found on the used market, or at gun shows. There's still deals out there to be had, if you look.

The bottom line is that a $700 - $800 NIB Browning HP ain't the only game in town.

P.S. I should also mention that Charles Daly has both 1911 clones and HP clones. Can't speak to their quality, but I've seen both for under $400. The finish on the ones I've seen looked good, but somebody that's owned/shot one will have to tell you about the rest.

That would be good.......Except nobody seems to agree on an answer! :scrutiny:

A best buy in 1911s is the Springfield GI45. Next up is the Mil-Spec. Unfortunately, it looks like neither comes in 9mm, but I could be wrong. Springfield does make some 1911s in 9mm. Springfield offers a lifetime guarantee and excellent service if you have any problems.

This 9mm Colt cost me $650 on the used market (about the going rate). It is totally reliable, although I did have to install a Brown extractor because the original extractor was worn out from improper loading. At first I almost did not buy it, but I am very glad I did. It has been one of my best buys, allowing me to shoot 1911s for half price.
