Ok, strange question. What exactly is a wad cutter and what is it designed to do. I am in the process of purchasing a S&W 442 and looking for the best ammo for edc / range time.

Go to this link http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/handgun/remington.asp and you will see what all the different bullets look like and their names.
As for range use, FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) rounds are probably the best because they are cheaper and don't lead foul your barrel.

Wad cutters are made with a hollow base that expands with the pressure generated burning the powder. This leads to good accuracy, and the shape allows the bullet to cut a clean hole in paper. The loads are usually reduced power target loads.
