So, I got into shooting and collecting after I got married and moved close to my wife's family: they are all shooters from way back. Since then, I've almost out-collected them with the guns I've picked up.

Here's my problem, I don't have room!

I don't really have a safe or cabinet, and I rent a small house with way too much stuff in it. I've mostly long guns and a pistol. They all sit in the corner by my bed. 6 long guns, 1 pistol. I'm still collecting, but I just don't have room. What are you thoughts? Collect more pistols and fewer long guns? jimmy-rig up some kind of cabinet?

Sell them to me.... Or go to academy and pick up a 12 gun safe for about 250. Works great and then go hand guns mine holds 8 long guns and 10 hand guns with room for mags and ammo.

I had same problem. Guess that comes from being a pack-rat. Went to Bass Pro and bought a cheapie 12 gun cabinet for around $175. Good price, when you are in BP. Worked till I found a more substantial safe.

Considering your current setup, the $250 safe isn't really a terrible idea; but don't fool yourself into believing that you can really get a safe for $250. It's just a cabinet at that price point.

You should also consider humidity control. moisture is bad for your guns.

I don't think you're going to get a lot of sympathy with ONLY 6 long guns and 1 pistol. Sorry (or happy, depending on how you take it) to inform you but you have a LONG way to go to even begin to catch up with some of the folks on this forum. You're still in the "puppy stage" of collecting...practically a new-born!! :) Why, my wife has over twenty guns, herself. Certainly you can keep up with the women, can't you??? ;) (Just joking around with you!)

Yeah I have a 18 gun safe and 22 long guns and 6 pistols. I keep my higher end guns in the safe and my cheaper ones sitting around, I hope if I were to ever be broke in on they would fill their arms with the cheapies and leave my safe alone. When I finally buy a house that I plan on staying at for good I have every intention of doing the walk in safe thing.

Let me suggest atleast a cheap gun safe for now, most of the smallest ones will hold 6 atleast.

You can get 10 guns in a 100 dollar 8 gun cabinet. Just bolt it to the wall in a closet and they will be out of sight and somewhat secure. chris3

If you do not want a safe, consider a rifle rack as a combination display and storage method. There are many types of rack available.

Cabelas has both horizontal and vertical racks. The vertical rack can be floor mounted. Add a simple heavy duty wall anchor at the top to prevent tippping, and you have a handly place to store and display your 6 long guns.

If you want them out of sight, consider the plastic 'under-bed' storage boxes, commonly available at Wal-Mart, Target, and most of the big 'home improvement' stores.

None of these are more secure than your front door, but they work to reduce clutter.

1) Remember it's quality not quantity that matters in the end. 100 KelTecs isn't a big hooray. ;)
2) Plan ahead! Way ahead. Build a 16x10 room as a gun room and within 2 years had run out of room. The vault (16x16) is awaiting funds. ;)

3) You'll get what you pay for with safes/cabinets. That $250-300 accommodation won't offer what the pricier ones will but no need to spend more for the safe than the guns are worth. However, you then need to plan ahead (see #2)

years ago . A girlfrind bought me a cheap Shopko gun cabinet for Xmas of 1990. about 3 years ago I took a piece of 3/4 inch ply wood & attached it to the back. or overlapped the cheap cardboard backing with the 3/4 inch plywood. then I put round wood pegs in the plywood so I could hang hand guns inside the cabinet as well as 8 long guns. worked great.
i have a Colt walker, Spiller&burr, New army 44,GI-45,Pt92 AFS, Ruger single six.
All hanging level inside. I used 2 wood pegs per hand gun. Looks really good.
Im out of room to hang anymore behind the long guns. So i am going to peg the side of the cabinet next hand gun purchase. I bought 2 wall mounts for all my shotguns.
PS it only takes 1 gun to be a collector:neener:

I have the same problem (but a lot more than 10 guns :) I really should spend less on guns and more on the house! ..... Naw!

I am a college student (low on funds that is) so I bought a small gun locker by Stack-On for around $80 new. It's supposed to hold 8 long guns and has a small (very small) shelf on top for ammo and such. Works well enough; it's steel and has a lock and can be bolted down if you wish. Better than nothing!

Have to agree, the cheap cabinets are better than nothing, offer a place to keep the clutter down and can lock them up.

i have the same problem. I built an oak cabinet that holds 6 guns and it has 8 in it now plus seven guns on the racks, one in a case, one leaning up, and 3 pistols stashed about the house

Can't beat a few gun safes, especially when you come home with another gun and it isn't that obvious to the wife just how many you have plus I have a son and two grandsons who like to add to their collection when they visit. Now I only need to collect the ones around the house and "disappear" them. They all hunt and two carry concealed, guess I taught them bad habits.
