Not happy with Sportsman's Warehouse

I've bought several guns from Sportsman's Warehouse over the past few years. I recently ordered an M&P 9mm 2.0 from them online. The order was placed on 10/7, gun was supposed to be shipped to a local store and available for pick-up on 10/12. 10/12 gets here, no email from SW telling me the gun is ready for pick up.

I called SW's customer service on 10/13. They said that the gun had shipped from their distribution center in Utah on 10/9. CS person checked with the store and they said it had not come in. CS suggested I wait another day.

Well, it's another day, it's nearly 5 PM here and still no sign of my gun showing up. Has anyone had anything like this happen before? Should I cancel the order or give it another day?

Yes. I recently had a similar experience with a Glock 44 that I ordered online from Sportsmans Warehouse.

You can't cancel the order until it arrives at the store. Just exercise some patience. It'll get there.

It's been seven days since you first placed your order. Like Scot.M, I'm wondering how old you are. You expect to have the gun in your hands in a week? Patience is a virtue that takes time and maturity to attain; some folks find waiting worth the while.

Depends on how I answer.

If you're 21, I'd figure a few days delay in shipping, or what color the sky is, might cause confusion. If you're 50, I'd think you should know how to conduct business.

So if you're 21, I'd try to help you out a little..

When I ordered my Winchester Safari Express it took a solid week for it to get from the store in CA to my store here in CO. That was back when there was no panic, no pandemic and no shortage of everything. I've always had great experiences with Sportsman's Warehouse, give it another day or so.

As a commercial service business that orders a lot of parts I can testify that shipping times have definitely increased since the hysteria began. If you think UPS is bad try shipping something motor freight.

At 21, I would have felt outraged by this comment. At 50, all I can do is look back and shake my head at myself at 21. Well said.

Yeah, you pretty much beat me to it. In my area, ever single LGS and camo box store (and we have a Sportsman's Warehouse) are stripped completely clean of almost everything. The OP is lucky he was able to even order a gun, let alone get one in a week. Especially if it's actually what he wanted.

There is no rhyme or reason for the ship[ping times from any of the carriers. I have had had orders from Berry's in Utah get here (GA) in 3 days and shipments from Tennessee take 8 using the same carrier and method. I have no dog in the fight, but I suspect that SW has about as much control over it as you do. If you cancel, you will likely have to wait even longer. Hope it comes soon!

Things are crazy busy for suppliers right now. Not Sportsman’s, but I’m in a similar situation with a different seller.

I ordered and paid for an in stock S&W 586 on Monday last week and a note was placed on the order that FFL would arrive via email on Wednesday. My dealer is closed Mon and Tues. Dealer FFL was sent on Wed, and shipping is two day FedEx. Friday I called and asked for status and they apologized profusely, the gun hadn’t shipped, they dropped the ball. My dealer called today, he has it. I’ll pick it up tomorrow.

I’m not sure what to make of the age comments and patience. I think you have a valid question. If other people are experiencing delays, well maybe it’s not a big deal to have to wait longer, which is why you are asking it seems.

I learned long ago not to get too excited if a gun takes a while. While it seems like the last couple have taken about a week or so to show up, looking back it was 5 or 6 days. Not bad, considering. I still have no idea how one gun I bought showed up at my FFL's store the same day I ordered it! I only had one gun coming, and I saw my FFL called, never expecting he called me to tell me it had arrived. From Bud's to Toledo in like 14 hours is pretty great. Closest runner up was a gun from PSA of all places, less than 48 hours. Never happened before or since, not even close.

As a 50 year old, I have to chime in... I have ordered a dozen or more rifles and handguns online the past few years, and when it doesn't show up on the day it's supposed to, I get all flustered and impatient to have the latest toy in my hands. However, I have never pestered my FFL or thought to post about my frustration online.

My last pistol, ordered in March, arrived a full four days late. It was my first 1911, and it was painful to grit my teeth and be patient. But it did eventually arrive and it was well worth it. The OP will learn...

That’s a faster turnaround than I got from Classic firearms. I posted a similar thread then too and the people here helped me come to realize a few things.

It’s the pandemic mate. Everything is going slowly. Estimate a week behind schedule.

Once the gun goes to the shipping service it’s out of the FFLs hands. There’s literally nothing they can do. UPS and other such carriers are working non-stop long hours to keep up with the sheer amount of online ordering. They can’t just “poof” more trucks, drivers, warehouses and package handlers into existence. It’s not like you’re waiting for insulin or a treatment for a life threatening illness. It’s a material possession and it will arrive when it arrives.

Outside of that, worrying about things you can’t change and have no power over, is useless.

Be patient. Sportman’s is awesome. Their stock shot up during all this because they delivered. They’re getting so drained on guns, some of them feel they might be out of a job if Biden gets elected because this frenzy will ramp up. And manufacturers are not gonna up production and get stuck with guns they can’t sell (ala 2012/2013).

I’m in DPRK Washington. Bought the only G20 in state, 3 hours away. 10 day state wait, turned into 22 days! No one knew anything. The governors office recommended I go to Idaho to buy! The higher up the chain you went, the less they knew about the funky laws here. The sheriff didn’t even know the letter of the law! New CCW apps closed until a month ago.

BUT, the. I was having an impossible time finding a specific lever action. Gun Broker dealers wanted $250 over MSRP. Turns out, a local place has one. $150 under MSRP!! Mecca if guns I never knew about. In/out in 30. I felt dirty getting what I wanted, that fast, in this climate.

Now I want, and can’t find a VP9 for love or money. One at that mecca store is $800 otd which is absurd. Scouting gun broker as we speak. Put my hands on a Walther PPQ yesterday at Sportsman’s. Went back today and got it. He said 2-2.5 weeks. In my home state of AZ or Montana where I used to live, I’d have had the gun in 30 minutes.

Sometimes the wait is good. Start looking at accessories and videos. Get excited for your gun. Any gun is a huge purchase.
