This piggybacks somewhat on the previous thread about Sportsman's Warehouse. In my neck of the woods (Phoenix) we have the Sportsman's Warehouse stores. Soon (probably by the end of the year) we'll have a Cabela's going in about 10 minutes from my house. Will Cabela's provide any real competition to Sportsman's or are their prices going to be similar?

My observations from having visited Cabelas many times when visiting relatives in the midwest and living daily with SW here in Oregon:

Cabelas is better for clothes in more sizes and variety and for "bulk" ammo in that they have their own cans of the stuff, while SW is better for most gear and firearms. The true advantage in having both will be that the selection of many items will not be identical and there will be differential pricing and sales for the careful shopper.

Around here, (Minnesota) Sportsmans Warehouse is better for firearms.
Cabela's seems to have a bit more accessories and ammo in stock.

Cabela's by me doesn't seem to staff their gun counter very well. Too few employees and if you do find one you have to chase them down.

I go to Cabela's when I want to look at animal mounts, great store displays and that's about it.

Of the two, I'd go to Sportsman's warehouse more often.

Agree

I agree completely with mirage and lennyjoe. I'm in MN too and SW has better deals on firearms. Although I do like going to the cabela's gun libary.

A couple of years ago, a Sportsman's Warehouse opened about 70 miles from where I live. It has been GREAT for the firearms consumer, interested in new guns. I have a friend/neighbor that is a FFL. He has always been fair with me. His response to Sportsman's was to say, while chuckling, it hasn't hurt me a bit. Now, some of the gun shop regulars are calling me. He supposed, they suddenly realized the prices, normally paid, were a little steep. I KNOW he was being KIND to several of the gun shops, and their prices. Ain't capitalism GREAT! I notice the previous BIG BOYS, have started to advertise, and run specials, that I never saw until SPORTSMAN'S! The days are gone when a shop shows someone, in the know, a firearm, and sells them, because it is $20 off of MSRP. THAT'S A GOOD THING!

They just opened a Sportsman's Warehouse about 15 mins from my house. My brother and friend are actually their right now.

I think the difference in products between the two is cool.

BUT if I was to buy something expensive, I'd still buy it from CABELA'S. Because they have the greatest return policy ever. I've returned lots of stuff, no questions asked. And got my money back, or a different product.

And that's important on expensive products.

sportsmans warehouse here is ridiculously over-priced. their guns, ammo, scopes, mounts, everything. I picked up a winchester model 70 from cabelas last year for under $300. it no longer says model 70 thanks to the idiot who reblued it. but it still shoots like a model 70. if it wasn't so darned far to drive, I'd be there every week checking out their deals.
