I was recently bequeathed my late father in laws Scottish Regalia. Three set of the whole rig. Kilts "Prince Charlie" coats. Sporran. Belts. Dirk. Sgian dubh. Everything. I am planning to wear this in public fairly frequently as every day wear. My question is. How the heck do you CCW in a kilt? my EDC is a Ruger Max 9 and it just a bit too big for the Sporran.

Any suggestions from from this magnificent brain trust?

Keister stash it.

Seriously though.
I'm not real familiar with kilt wear, you do wear a belt with it? A leather flap holster made square to look like a pouch would fit right in.

A wide leather belt can be worn but generally isn't but that's a good idea. I've seen some square "holsters" that might fit. I'm not sure if I could get a thigh holster to stay in place with my thighs but it might be worth a try. I do remember someone saying sewing a holster to the underflap and then covering it with the sporran.

With formal wear, you are meant to have a 2" leather belt, which only has two belt loops fit to the kilt.

The formal sporran can be confining, as many are made to only have a coin purse, as the vest and jacket have pockets galore.

A casual wear, often no belt or a simple 1" leather belt is worn; a larger sporran is also more common.

The make "piper's pouches" which are rectangular , in the neighborhood of 8x4x3

Which can be forgiving of the "stuff" modern life wants. Especially as a sporran can get crowded with a wallet and a cellphone stuffed in.

A belly-band holster is generally the simplest answer. If buried under a lot of layers typically.

The more typical issue with a IWB holster is that the vest needs tailoring to better be a cover garment.

If there is a local Scot's tailor about, getting a couple of patches of kid leather installed where the clips to your IWB grip best is probably a good investment.

I know some folk who use a small-of-the-back holster, since you often wear cover garments, and the SOB/MOB often means fewer tailoring needs.

I ran into this recently--last week--for Burns' Night. My DeSantis IWB did pretty well, it's all synthetic, so not as ugly to wool as a steel belt clip might be.

Some excellent ideas. It's been almost 35 years since I wore a kilt on a regular basis (Pipe Band) and being in a socialist country CCW was illegal so I didn't even think about it at all. I don't see myself wearing the "Prince Charlies" all the time but I have been trying to think of what kind of top will work to cover. I prefer IWB. I think my late father in law would have gotten a laugh from a t-shirt tucked in and a Hawaiian over the top with the kilt. He was that kind of man. Methinks I need to try a few things. I have a all kydex DeSantis IWB that might just work. I hadn't considered IWB with the kilt. I've been trying to find someone to take the kilt in just a bit but taylors are few and far between in North Idaho let alone any who know how to work with a kilt. My Much Better Half says she knows a local piper from work and she's going to see if maybe he has some leads. GBExpat. I've gone as small as I want to. The Max 9 is small and I don't want to loose any of the 12 + 1 I have. We do have packs of feral dogs in this area. Back in the day we used to sew a patch onto the under flap as a pocket and I've been musing about maybe doing a variant of that.

Belly band holsters work with everything as long as you're wearing a shirt.

A leather "sneaky peat" on the belt wouldn't look out of place.

I carried a 1903 Colt in a sporran a few times before compact pistols became common.

Entropy. I LOVE that idea! I love living in Idaho since Constitutional carry came through and you can open carry. I do plan on wearing the dirk and Sgian dubh. Alas I don't have a Basket Hilted Broad Sword (AKA incorrectly as Claymore). Just my Late Father in Laws Navy officers swords and I don't feel it's appropriate to wear those. HSO. Alas I still have quite a large belly even after all the weight loss so I'm not sure a belly band would work. I checked out the Sneaky Pete and they don't offer one that takes the 12 rd mag or allows for the SwampFox red dot sight.

A "Claymore" like this Scottish backsword?
Renfest.jpg

This is SWMBO (the one who looks slightly more pregnant here) and I 28 years ago at the MN Renaissance Festival. I have my Basket-hilt backsword on a baldric covered in dark green satin with an Order of St. Andrew brooch on it. The dirk is actually a steak knife my Dad took off a suspect many years before that. I made the sheath. I also made my sporran; in 25 years, it has taken a beating, that's why it is fancier here than the pic in post #9. The decorations on the top are Knights of Pythias regalia I got in a thrift shop.
As a minor member of the nobility, I have my silver wine goblet on my belt, one feather in the cap, signifying I am a duine uasal (Armigerous (having their own coat of arms) member of a clan, in this case Clan Stewart.) not a chieftain, and certainly not the Chief, who at the time I am depicting would have been JamesV of Scotland, and is currently Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Ironically, when I went to the Waxahachie Renfest in TX, they had a Scottish king, and I was better dressed than him! I used Royal Stewart because that is the bolt of tartan my mother in law had. She made the kilt, my sister in law made the doublet. (It was hot that day, I had the detachable sleeves off.) My belt is an old Sam Browne belt, one of my Dad's.
SWMBO made her own costume.

I do like the idea of the flintlocks. I was looking for pictures of the "claymore" and "basket hilted broadsword" and came across a article that says they can be used interchangeably historically. Not what I was taught but I'm no expert. I know all the officers in the Regiment carried the basket hilted but I suspect that was because of mil reg. As it happens Edwardware my Much Better Half sometimes uses Thunderware for her Taurus 605 3 inch .357. I think I will have to pilfer it and give it a try. Thank you all for he help. I think I'm going to dig the "everyday" kilt out of the garment bag and play with the Thunderware and a couple of my IWB. If they work I won't have to have it taken in.
