Gun Fashion Question

On a good day there is nothing under a kilt but lipstick. Sorry to the feminine members of THR for that crass statement but that is how I was taught to wear one. BTW I'm Italian and had to wear one as a Renaisennce actor.
Anyway My vote for open carry would be a revolver with a Good Leather Holster.
The other option would be a 1911 again with a Leather Full Flap Holster, Like the old Army Rig.
I would look around for Military Surplus. I seem to remember seeing some holster rigs from one of the "Great Wars" from Scottish Regiments.
Best of Luck to you

Seriously? This one on the belt, backed up with a S&W 642 in my sporan

The whole "no belt" thing could mean that you may have to look into a belly band.
Well, actually ... the original "kilts" were "belted plaids" - a long piece of tightly woven wool cloth folded and wrapped around the waist and secured with with a heavy leather belt. There was usually no stitching in the fabric at all, and the excess material was thrown over the shoulder in good weather or wrapped around the shoulders (and maybe the head too) for protection in cold and wet weather. It could also be used as a blanket at night. The process of putting on the feileadh mòr was apparently quite an art to master, possibly involving laying it out on the ground and rolling up in it.

The feileadh beag or the modern "little kilt" was supposedly invented by an English industrialist as a more handy alternative wear for daily employment. This is the version that has the pleats stitched in permanently and the part that would otherwise go around the shoulders eliminated.

jselvy: tha mi fhein direach ag' ionnsachagh Gàidhlig. Chan eil mi ag' radh no ag' sgriobhagh glè mhath fhathast :(

I can't argue with the SMLE. The capacity for firing 20 aimed rounds per minute in trained hands is hard to argue with.

Does anyone really know the .455 webley very well? I am not familiar and have heard some terrible stories about it.

I had to wear a kilt at my friends wedding and I had both a belt and a "man purse" (I don't know the real name).

Open carry - I like the idea of a large revolver, 44 mag in a leather holster to match.
Concealed - How about a Walther PPK in the man purse? Or make a "tactical kilt" with a pocket in the fold of the kilt?

Since you said Open Carry

First choose the tool that suits the job.
Then choose the accessories (fancy stocks, engraving.)
Then a practical rig that looks good to you.

For looks it is hard to beat wood and leather, but it's all a matter of personal choice.

It all hinges on why you carry.

You need to get a CCW, then you could wear one of those goofy Leg Holsters under your um, kilt. But seriously, though, one of those thigh holsters under a kilt would be pretty easy access, you could just pull your kilt up to your armpit (instead of your shirt) and off you go.

Just out of curiosity, how does a kilt work when you go #2? Do you just pull it up over your head or what?

as far as restroom arrangements go its pretty self-explanatory just hike it up

Alex Malcolm does good work, but I swear by Hector Russell of Edinburgh's Princes Street

"it all hinges on why you carry."
I've been thinking about this. I carry because primarily I am ready to take personal responsibility for my own safety and am willing to lend a hand in protecting the lives of the people around me.

Why I insist on an open carry,
I feel that this taking of responsibility is nothing to be ashamed of and thus is nothing to hide

Leather?

Jselvy,
I don't know where your from or where your living, leather in the U.S. might be a touch hot. At least it is here in Arizona. Of course it will depend upon your Kilt. In any of my modern kilts Sportskilt, NeoKilt and of course Utilikilt they have belt loops and it's a little more secure so I don't mind wearing OWB a full size handgun (SigP226R) or a midsize(SigP229R).

Not to sound like a smart @$$ but Big Calhoun did have a good idea,
thigh carry seems to be the most practical when wearing a kilt
I've just never found anyone who makes a comfortable one..

What kind of kilt are you wearing and where in the U.S. are you settling down? Once you find your way let's see some Kilts and Guns! When I get a camera I'll post as well!

hmmm we need a guns and kilts thread...

I am headed to Wyoming land of the free.
My kilt belt is quite secure, but it is a traditional short kilt in 18oz wool thus no belt loops
What is so surprising about kilts and guns? The Napoleonic Imperial Guard didn't think it was so funny neither did the Afganis during the first Afgan war. Our modern right to keep and bear arms was first delineated in the Treaty of Arbroath almost a century before the Magna Carta

What's Suprising?

Nothing suprising about a Scot or an Paddy in a kilt with a gun, club, knife, axe, sword, or any other instrument which would inflict a great deal of pain and damage! (I'm a wonderful mutt as a heinz 64 so no getting on me about being a paddy, I fit both bills).

Your right about Napoleonic troops not laughing. When friends ask me about being taken seriously in a kilt I just remind them that kilted (or something close to it) men conquered the world repeatedly. And even after the rest of Europe became civilized it was the vikings (another ancestor) terrorized Europe and even the Meditteranean for many more years!

Now if someone will just please make a thigh holster that wears well under a kilt.

kilts

+1 on kilts.

I have Scots heritage, wear both modern and traditional kilts. Just this past saturday, it was in the 80s, and I did 90 minutes of mountain biking in the hills with my dogs. I got home, showered, put on a kilt, loose shirt and a pair of flip flops, with a Glock 26 in a fobus paddle holster (which stayed just fine with no belt) and went out and grilled 3 pounds of sirloin, rare, marinated in Jack Daniels. Shared it with the dogs.

It was a good day.

I have a utilikilt with the gun pocket, which holds a Glock 26, Kimber Ultra CDP or Springfield XD Compact quite nicely. I also use an IWB with clip for a Keltec P3AT, works just fine without belt.

I'm of no particular heritage, but I really dig modern kilts. I used to have one but outgrew it, and it seems all options are very expensive and/or hard to find. I suppose there isn't much of a market, but if anyone has any websites or suggestions I would welcome them. It's great to hear Utilikilt will make a gun pocket, but utilikilts are well over 100 dollars, which is just a little much for this poor white boy.

Modern Kilts

A kilt for every occasion

Just FYI I've never seen Utilikilt offer a holster but I do know that Neo Kilt offers a Holster built into the Kilt for a full size gun.

I'm of bastard descent so I can't tie my lineage through any particular clan, so I stick to the general colors or the non traditional so as not to be accused of leaching. Each of these companies offer great products and depending upon what your looking for you can find it. I would recommend Sport Kilt for cost as you can get a basic Kilt for 100-150 bucks.

I would recommend this:
Browning BDA 380, it has a very nice shiney finish and quality wood grips. It looks like they were very attentive to detail and finish on the whole thing. It holds 13 rounds of .380, and functions flawlessly. It's the gun I miss the most, and one of the best pieces I've ever owned. It isn't ultra-modern like a glock, so it goes with the "traditional" look that you want, and it will look good in a black leather holster (similar to WWII style holsters) for formal-wear, or a brown leather (WWII style) holster for casual wear. It's not a big gun, but it's not too incredibly small either. One of the nice things about this gun is that it is mildly compact, but has a full size grip, so it handles like a service pistol. It's also extremely accurate and reliable.

A makarov holster should fit it perfectly, since they are similar in size and shape.

Formal:

EDIT: Also consider that those flap over holsters are considered a little more PC for open carry, and will probably get less calls to the police. They're kind of classy in an old-school way too.
