Ladies and Gentleman,

I have a fashion question concerning handguns. This is aimed primarily at Lawdog, as I have read and enjoyed his dissertation on "court" and "BBQ" guns, but any and all constructive comments are welcome.

What firearm does one carry when wearing a kilt? I am returning to the US and will take up residence in a state that allows open carry, but I will not be giving up my kilt as it is the most comfortable item of clothing that I own. I would like suggestion as the informal wear involves brown leather with dirk and sgian dubh in black and the formal is with black leather.

Thank you for your prompt responses,
Jefferson

If you are gonna wear a skir..I mean kilt here in the US, you got bigger worries than what is the fashionable accessory for a kilt. But maybe a purs..I mean man bag would be a nice accessory. Just my .02

you know why they call it a kilt?

Because that's what they did to the last guy that called it a skirt :)

Good for you for remaining true to your heritage. As for your question, I have no clue. Do kilts have pockets? Do you wear them with loose shirts? A Smartcarry rig might work. www.smartcarry.com

I'd think it would depend greatly on the rest of the wardrobe. For example, are you wearing a vest or jacket which would conceal a shoulder rig? Is there a belt which would make a IWB holster possible?

Worst case, you could maybe find some sort of thigh band for under the kilt that might hold something small and light.

Not to sound like a opportunistic smartass, but thigh carry seems to be the most practical when wearing a kilt. Either that or IWB.

Disregard any jibes calling a kilt a dress. In this country you have people walking around with their pants nearly falling down and many see that as cool which is just plain ridiculous so take that for what its worth..

Personally I would recommend a Browning Hi-Power.

I prefer my 642 in my Sporan. :) I've never open carried with a kilt. If I open carry its cause I'm hunting, hiking, or camping. In all those instances I wear pants. My kilt is reserved for highland games and/or strongman competitions. If I were to open carry with my kilt I suppose it would probably be a revolver. Or anything not so tactical because unfotunately unless you have a utilikilt then you are not wearing even close to what could be considered tactical when wearing a kilt. If you were going for something for dress up time, I would go with a pearl gripped nickel plated SA Army clone. For more utilitarian times I would choose a Stainless fullsized .500 S&W Mag. It takes some big ones to carry that and it takes some really big one to wear a kilt (unless a goth kid lashing out for attention) in the US for 'casual friday'. :) Seriously though, maybe not the .500 but for casual friday I would wear my kilt, and either S&W 686 or Stainless GP100. Both with 4" barrel. :)

You will get some seriously strange answers I'm sure.

To answer some other questions, most kilts do not have pockets. You're supposed to have a sporan (man purse/fancy fanny pack). I highly doubt smartcarry would be....umm....uhh....smart. Getting to would cause you to flash everying. :)

Traditional kilts like the type that I wear have no pockets.
The Argyll type jacket would cover a shoulder holster.
As far as kilts not being tactical, true but the stun factor more than makes up for it. The BGs don't quite know how to process a man in a kilt giving me a little extra time to defend.

thanks

Good comeback. It was just a little friendly ribbin. My family is mostly Scottish (Ormsby and Wallace) so I have family members and tons of friends who have worn one. Heck, my best friend even got married in one.
Best gun would be a Stainless 1911 with Ivory grips in a smart carry.

Depends on the color of your shoes...

...but really, I'd love to be able to wear a wool skirt in the summer, commando style. Thought about this for twenty years. And I'm just the guy to do it.

But a fat polish guy with grey hair - What'd be my tartan?

Back to topic, in all seriousness - I'd go thigh holster, with BHP or 1911.

I'm thinking a Nickel or Blued S&W Model 29 with stag grips (whatever you carry, needs to be wearing stag grips).

Or a 1911 with a set of Wicked grips in something nice like Spalted Maple with an interesting Celtic type inlay.

Like this one:

Just stay away from "Tactical plastic" or stainless steel, and have nice natural grips (wood, bone or horn).

EDIT
Oh I just had a wild idea ... you need to find a real nice Webley Mark VI with the appropriate British military holster (with the flap).

Oddly enough this topic has come up before. I did a search and could not find the thread I was looking for but I know there is one.

In the mean time here is a good quote from a fellow THR memeber

"IF you wear a UtiliKilt (modern kilt)

and IF you pocket-carry a revolver

and IF you decide to run to catch up to someone

you DO NOT want to pocket carry a revolver with an exposed hammer.

'nuff said.

Figured that might be useful for ya.

This isn't exactly relevant, but this thread reminded me of a paragraph from Robert A. Heinlein's Methuselah's Children:
Chapter 2:
WHEN LAZARUS went to bed he stepped out of his kilt and chucked it toward a wardrobe which snagged it, shook it out, and hung it up neatly. "Nice catch," he commented, then glanced down at his hairy thighs and smiled wryly; the kilt had concealed a blaster strapped to one thigh, a knife to the other. He was aware of the present gentle custom against personal weapons, but he felt naked without them. Such customs were nonsense anyhow, foolishment from old women-there was no such thing as a "dangerous weapon," there were only dangerous men.

My vote would be for a deeply blued 1911 or Hi-Power, in a pancake-style holster dyed to match the belt, and traditional wood grips to (somewhat) match or accent the color of the plaid... if it were me.

Hallo a jselvy, agus fàilte gu An Ard Rathad :)
(hello, jselvy, and welcome to The High Road)

Open carry or concealed...???
Concealed: in the sporan of course.
Open: I'm thinking maybe a big single action Ruger in a full flap holster at 12:00 ;)

I've actually never worn a kilt, but if I did it would be the feileadh mòr rather than the modern version.

A bheil thu a' fuireach ann Alba anis? Ma tha, dè roinn?

I play in a pipe band here in town and have spent a ton of time in a kilt. Most comfortable thing ever. If I were going to carry in my kilt I'd carry a 1911 with nice stag grips. Nothing flashy, no nickle or stainless. Just a blued 1911 with stag groups.

Now for a historical weapon one might consider a Webley Mk V or so. With a red military doublet, swagger stick, leather holster and pith helmet. Can't go wrong there.

As an aside:
We had a guy in the band that carried a Desert Eagle 50 strapped to his theigh... big guy. He and a few other members were in the Safeway in Estes Park buying dinner one night after the games had ended for the day and THUD, out falls his DE 50. He calmly picks it up, hikes up the kilt and puts it away.... talk about getting funny looks.

The feiladh mor is a little too complicated for daily wear, at least for me.

Tha mi a'fuireach ann an Port Seton, ach thogach mi ann Missouri
Deann imrich mi ann Wyoming.

BTW the Ruger or the 1911 sound the best to me, those Wicked grips are sweet.

Sorry about the Gaelic I'm still not very good at it

Lazerus Long, the hard-case character from Robt Hienliine, wore his vibro -knife, and blaster under his kilts to all occasions. Leg holsters.

awesome!

What firearm does one carry when wearing a kilt?

This is the best question that I have ever seen on THR.

Seriously, though, you should be asking "what holster" to wear with a kilt. The whole "no belt" thing could mean that you may have to look into a belly band.

Aren't kilts usually warn with a little purse thing in front? That strikes me as a good place to keep a small gun.
